Integration Testing and Test Virtualization Solution from IBM Rational
Successful organizations understand they must innovate to improve software delivery capability and that cost, complexity and velocity are increasingly making today’s quality paradigm impractical.
Three primary factors have been developing over the past decade: Increasing cost of quality, Increasing development complexity, Balancing quality and speed
Despite a lot of effort, the results over the past decade are not good enough. The need for a better approach to managing software quality is clear. IBM Rational Test Virtualization Solution can help improve software quality management and testing to drive down the cost of software development, cut risk to the business and reduce cycle time without compromising software quality.
Virtualizing complex test environments which may be deployed in traditional software development or cloud environments can aid in driving down cost. Executing on-going integration testing much earlier in the cycle helps development teams identify and resolve defects sooner. Virtualizing services allows teams to reduce wait times and quickly deliver the necessary testing environments.
Speaker
Rajesh Bhave, IT Specialist - QM, IBM Rational Labs

10.00 AM - 10.30 AM: Session 2
Shift Left Principle - Key Enabler for First Time Right
Many studies have been carried out on IT project failures. Although there are some variations in each report, broadly it affirms that the percentage of successful IT implementations is not significant. There are a number of reasons cited. One of the reasons is delayed involvement of testers in the SDLC. Also, there are a number of research studies and papers reaffirming that significant defects are induced during the requirement phase and the cost of fixing goes exponential towards later part of SDLC and hence early involvement of testing team is beneficial. While there are certainly great benefits in QA or testing team getting early involvement, there are many operational challenges, due to which we still see many defects during testing and thereby impacting the go live date especially for large implementations. Shift left is not a ground breaking path, but it reaffirms the popular belief of getting early involvement of testing with some fundamental shift in the mindset and other elements. However the Shift Left includes not just the QA or testing team but should include the user group and other groups.

A Look Into Automated Web UI Tests!
There are some misconceptions around automated Web testing. Do you really need it? Is it easy? Does one needs to know fair amount of programming to automate tests ? In this session we will focus on demystifying web testing. And we will learn some best practices. We will discuss the benefits of UI automation. We will discuss the various deciding factors of automating tests and how to prepare your application for automation. Your development team and test team need to work cohesively for the best result. We will get into detail discussion of when to automate and when not to automate a test. How do we structure and effective test project? How do we create reliable automated UI tests? How do we deal with dynamic content? How to use a data-driven testing approach? All of these questions will be addressed. This session will be combination of theoretical concepts and a live demonstration to understand best practices of flexible locators, data driven testing, modular testing, recording and executing various kind of tests.

Agile QA Organization
Enterprise IT organizations across the world are on the fast lane in adopting Agile Methodologies like TDD & BDD. IT organizations and QA service providers used to waterfall methodology face unique challenges to transform their central QA organization in order to align to agile methodology and continuous integration. This paper examines the challenges for such a QA organization from multiple perspectives - vision/mission, people, processes, tools, knowledge management, operations / execution and organization structure. The paper also tries to provide some solutions to the unique challenges faced by IT organizations and QA service providers.

Five most neglected areas in Software Testing
We have experimented and talked about different testing approaches, we have seen peaks in automation. We as a testing community became more matured in developing tools and frameworks. We started talking about Agile and the best way to fit our testing practices to Agile methodology. In this whole process, there are few pieces that we are missing, the pieces which helps in analyzing our end result, pieces that increases our productivity and effectiveness and pieces that can put us in readiness to change and adopt. This session will talk about practices that exist but are neglected in software testing, tools that exists but not effectively used in testing life cycle.

Generating Business Value from Test Automation Initiatives
Testing Groups within IT organizations are always finding ways to reduce cost and cycle time of testing without compromising on quality of verification activities. Test automation initiatives have become a very popular “quick win” among QA Managers (QA directors, Test Managers and TCoE heads) as a means to reduce cycle time of regression testing and with time, save valuable dollars as the automation scripts are exercised across multiple releases. Down the road they start seeing the futility of such an initiative as the cost of maintaining the automation scripts goes way beyond the expectations or in the worst case the upfront automation development costs are considered sunk. This talk will focus on how enterprise level Test Automation initiatives need to be planned and set up so that envisioned business value from such programs are realized.

Quality goes beyond Testing
Customer expectations and market perceptions are driving the way organizations are shaping their IT strategies. Emergence of Quality as a business imperative and proliferation of NextGen SMAC technologies warrant a tectonic shift in the way software testing is professed. With applications becoming synchronous to brands the future of testing has to go beyond the sphere of software validation. Today, Testing is a point of inflection; it needs to regenerate itself into an intelligent business value differentiating function. Reinventing testing with an engineering outlook to assure end to end business processes, and delivering world class user experience is an imperative for creating success in future.

Facing Quality Challenges in Highly Competitive and Complex Product Domains
Shrinking shelf-life, shorter development cycles, disruptive innovations and rapidly changing complex technologies are throwing harsh challenges to quality management. Typical automation frameworks and testing the developed code would be a mediocre response to these challenges. Non-testing quality activities are no longer an option to remain in business and age old techniques like defect prevention have become much more meaningful to handle such challenges. This discussion and presentation would look into quality activities beyond mundane testing tasks.

Closed Loop Quality System: A Quality Excellence Model
For organizations, delivering mission critical software as a service to the end customers, there exists a break-even point between CUSTOMER QUALITY & COST OF QUALITY, either side of which becomes non-economic and unaffordable to business investments. This is where the Closed Loop Quality System can come into the act of optimizing the test process and ensuring improved QUALITY at reduced COST.

While through CLQS, Test programs can drive Test Efficiency by improving productivity, Yield, etc. at one end, and Test Effectiveness by improving Phase containment and product design/architecture at the other end. The closed loop feedback cycle brings in continual improvements in the overall product quality, leading to visible business impacts and improved Total Customer Experience.
