siliconindia | | August 20189Ayurveda has adequate preventive procedures to prevent the onset of DR in diabetic patients. If already developed, ayurvedic treatments can protect from being blind and lead a normal life with visioncan achieve this aim with systematic ayurvedic treatments and medicines. The next question is about the type of ayurvedic treatments in managing DR. A proper and scientific ayurvedic treatment is never cookbook type. There is no single treatment or medicine that fits all stages of DR in all patients. Medicine & treatment procedures will vary from patient to patient. Differences in body constitution, habits, mental status and clinical condition are the reason. Presence of other diseases also play a role in this difference of treatments. So, doctor must conduct a detailed initial assessment of the patient. This includes clinical stage of disease, body constitution, daily eyestrain, climatic conditions, food habits, and hereditary factors. Diabetes control of the patient is also a critical factor. All these factors are influential in one way or another in the progress of DR. A detailed analysis of these factors on ayurvedic basis is the next step. Only after that can the doctor decide upon the care plan of patient. The patient must also be reviewed at regular intervals. Adequate changes from time-to-time are vital for the successful management. Changes in patient condition and external factors affecting the disease are also considered. A very sad fact is that generally, DR patients do not approach ayurveda for a first line management. Such patients are of three groups. The first group approach after severe retinal hemorrhage. The second group come after taking many eye injections, and sometimes even surgery. The third group of patients come after they have lost vision in one eye. In the first and second group, damage would have already occurred to the visual organ. The ayurvedic ophthalmologist has to work on a damaged organ rather than a diseased one. In the third case, doctor needs to work on the anxiety & depression of the patient. Patients would have gone through a very bad experience. Due to this, he is always apprehensive of any further treatment. Systematic ayurvedic treatments can be very helpful for DR patients. The earlier they approach ayurveda, easier the treatment. It is very well known that probability for developing DR is very high for a diabetic patient. It is also known that diabetic patients need to undergo regular eye checkups. But results of such checkups never end in patients receiving a preventive care. Eye checkups happen for namesake only. Patients undergo eye checkup only to see if it is time to start treatment. This is against the fundamental concept of a preventive approach. The aim of such checkups should be to advice the patient, manage his condition, and prevent the onset of DR. This is possible in Ayurveda. Ayurvedic ophthalmologists can identify the early stages of onset of DR. Ayurveda has adequate preventive procedures to prevent the onset of DR in diabetic patients. If already developed, ayurvedic treatments can protect from being blind and lead a normal life with vision.
