It always arrives without any announcement. It makes its first appearance as a complication of diabetes. Without any further delay, DR attains its own identity. By that time, the victim would have already started the journey towards blindness. Yet, nine out of 10 people are still unaware of the seriousness or eventual outcome of this disease. DR is currently the leading cause of blindness in productive age group (i.e., from 20-64 years). This itself proves that the current protocols of managing DR are inadequate. We need solutions that tackle the root cause of diseases in our fight against DR. This is exactly where Ayurveda can help. The first milestone of ayurvedic treatment is to control the pathology behind DR. This arrests progress of disease. Patient can preserve & protect their vision from this stage of ayurvedic treatment. The second milestone would be to improve the vision in a phased (step-by-step) manner. Ayurveda has the required scientific theory, medicines and treatment procedures to achieve this goal. Patients are often confused about ayurvedic management and treatment procedures for diabetic retinopathy. They ask if ayurvedic treatment can cure DR completely. This is an irrelevant approach. The right expectation for a patient would be to lead a normal life with medicine. The simple reason is that DR is a complication of diabetes. So, chances of complication are present as long as root cause (diabetes) is present. Hence, it is very difficult to get a permanent total cure. Instead, patients can lead a quite normal life with vision. Patients IN MY OPINIONArunjith Puthussery
