Faculty And School :

Faculty of Business and Law : The Faculty of Business and Law consists of 1,890 undergraduate, 940 taught and 130 research postgraduate students. It has 140 academic and 70 other staff.

The Faculty spans a wide range of disciplines including internet law, maritime law, environmental law, strategy, marketing, HR management, design, textiles, graphics and fashion.

A significant proportion of the research of the Faculty is concentrated in specialist centres, including the Institute of Maritime Law, the Institute for Law and the Web at Southampton, the Centre for Banking, Finance and Sustainable Development, the Centre for Operational Research, Management Science and Information Systems, and the Centre for Risk Research.

Faculty of Engineering and the Environment : The Faculty of Engineering and the Environment consists of 1,560 undergraduate, 300 taught and 370 research postgraduate students. It has 340 academic and 140 other staff.

The Faculty of Engineering and the Environment brings together a wide range of engineering disciplines, including acoustical, aerospace, biomedical, civil, computational, electro-mechanical, environmental, geotechnical and materials engineering, energy technologies, ship science and transportation. Academic activity is located on the main Highfield campus.

In the 2008 RAE, submissions were made by constituent elements of the Faculty to two Units of Assessment, one of which was ranked in the top ten in the UK based on GPA (civil engineering). Five subjects are currently ranked in the top ten in the UK for teaching as listed by the 2010 Times Good University Guide: aeronautical & manufacturing engineering, civil engineering, electrical engineering, environmental sciences and mechanical engineering.

Faculty of Health Sciences : The Faculty of Health Sciences consists of 2,400 undergraduate, 480 taught and 100 research postgraduate students. It has 170 academic and 80 other staff.

The Faculty brings together research and teaching in cancer, palliative and end of life care, active living and rehabilitation, and the organisation and delivery of care. The main academic activity of the Faculty is located on the main Highfield campus of the University, although there are a number of teaching outposts located across the south Hampshire region. As well as academic teaching, the Faculty of Health Sciences is a major contributor to continuous professional development training in key disciplines.

Faculty of Medicine : The Faculty of Medicine consists of 1,250 undergraduate, 80 taught and 140 research postgraduate students. It has 370 academic and 340 other staff.

The Faculty’s research focuses on early translation of basic discoveries. Main research programmes are respiratory medicine, developmental sciences, cancer sciences, bone and joint diseases, and general practice, with cross-cutting themes in translational immunology and stem cells and regenerative medicine. It also has a reputation for its innovative approach to undergraduate medical education.

Academic activity is located primarily on the Southampton General Hospital site, 15 minutes from the main Highfield campus.
