About Southern Illinois University Edwardsville

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville celebrated its 50th Anniversary in 2007. The institution traces its origin to a farsighted group of concerned parents and business leaders in the community. In 1955, the group began an advocacy campaign to establish a public university. By 1956, they had formed the Southwestern Illinois Council for Higher Education. Southern Illinois University Edwardsville is a public comprehensive university dedicated to the communication, expansion and integration of knowledge through excellent undergraduate education as its first priority and complementary excellent graduate and professional academic programs; through the scholarly, creative and research activity of its faculty, staff and students; and through public service and cultural and arts programming in its region.

Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, as a premier Metropolitan University, will be recognized nationally for the excellence of its programs and development of professional and community leaders.

Schools and colleges

School of Dental Medicine:
Since 1972, Southern Illinois University School of Dental Medicine has continued to carry out its mission — to improve the oral health of southern Illinois and the region through education, patient care, scholarship and service. In 1975, the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville dental school graduated its first class of excellent dental practitioners. In 2010, the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville dental school is celebrating its 35th Anniversary—35 years of graduating outstanding dentists.  Including the Class of 2010, the Southern Illinois University Edwardsville dental school has now trained over 1,500 dentists.

School of Nursing:These phrases from our School of Nursing mission statement greet visitors, students, faculty, and staff in the form of hanging ceiling banners visible on the second floor of Alumni Hall where the SON offices are located. It is our way of educating everyone about whom we are and what we are about.

The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville, School of Nursing is a dynamic place to learn and study the Profession of Nursing. Our curriculum is learner-centered meaning that classes are interactive, focused on learning, and citical thinking a skill essential to nursing care.

School of Pharmacy: The Southern Illinois University Edwardsville School of Pharmacy, the only pharmacy program in southern Illinois, offers a professional program leading to the Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) degree.  Established in 2005, the school graduated its first class in May 2009 and received full accreditation in June 2009. Class sizes range from 80-82 students with 90% of those students residing in Illinois.

The School values excellence in teaching, pharmacy practice, research/scholarship and service.  The program of study is based on current knowledge and technology from pharmacy and other disciplines and is delivered through a variety of innovative teaching strategies.

School of Business: Mission is to “prepare students and business professionals and to improve business practice.” The primary ways in which we accomplish that mission is through our academic programs and research. Our academic programs are benchmarked constantly through our commitment to continuous improvement as exemplified by our accreditation in accounting and business by AACSB International. Our faculty contribute to understanding business and economics through their cutting edge research which is published in peer-reviewed national and international journals.

School of Engineering: The mission of the School of Engineering is to provide excellent innovative engineering, computer science and construction education to citizens of Illinois, the greater St. Louis metropolitan area and representatives of the global community.
