The Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science has evolved and grown, shaped by the needs of the community it serves. Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science located in the Watts-Willowbrook section of South Los Angeles, the institution benefits from its location and the corresponding diversity and complexity of its patient population by creating an academic environment unlike any other. Through innovative basic science, Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science conducts education, patient care and research programs-training physicians and allied health professionals to provide care to under served populations.Following nearly a decade of community-based advocacy for improved medical services,  Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science was incorporated in August of 1966. In response to the lack of adequate medical facilities in the area, the institution later became a University and changed its name in 1987 as Charles Drew University of Medicine and Scienceto reflect its expanded academic role and identity. His dedication to learning and the sharing of knowledge to benefit mankind is the inspiration for the University.

School of Nursing :Mervyn M. Dymally School of Nursing (MMDSON) website. As the Founding Dean of this newest addition to the Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science (CDU) core of academic programs, it is indeed my honor to join an interdisciplinary team of nationally and internationally renowned academicians, dedicated to the mission of educating students to design and implement innovative approaches in meeting the health care needs of our most undeserved communities. The MMDSON is named in honor of Dr Mervyn M. Dymally, a long-time supporter of Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science who served as California’s first and only black Lieutenant Governor. In 1966, he became the first black state senator and later served six terms of office in the U.S. Congress. It is through his vision and dedication that the School of Nursing is now housed within the newly erected Life Sciences Research Nursing Education Building. We are indebted to his steadfast support and look forward to the opportunity to carry on the legacy of service in keeping with the Charles Drew University of Medicine and Science tradition, established by the pioneering work of Dr Charles R. Drew.
