Shanghai, the largest city in China has a subway system with 5 million daily riders and 2 billion riders annually. It was opened in 1995, making Shanghai the third city in Mainland China, after Beijing and Tianjin to have a rapid transit system. Since then Shanghai Metro has become one of the fastest-growing rapid transit system in the world. As of 2012, there are 11 metro lines and over 434 kilometers of tracks in operation, thus being the longest network in the world. There are plasma screens on the platforms which informs the passengers about the arrival and departures of trains along with advertisements and public service announcements.

Beijing Metro, China (Ranked 5):

The Beijing Metro in China is ranked fifth busiest subway in the world. The subway’s first line was opened in 1968, with 6 million daily riders and 1.84 billion riders annually, and the network now has 15 lines, 192 stations and 372 km of track in operation. The first train departs the terminals at around 5 am, while the last leave around 11 pm. The subways are generally closed after midnights, unless a special occasion extends its operating hours.
