Sunil K Goyal, CEO & Fund Manager, YourNest Angel Fund“I feel that the toughest part is future gazing. Being a VC, you have to predict the future of the portfolio companies. Even if you have a small iota of doubt in your mind, you have to keep believing that whatever you believe in will happen someday,” says Sunil K Goyal.

He also feels that the move from the corporate world to that of a VC might be a bumpy ride for few. He adds, “If one enjoys the comfort of working in a very huge team, the role of a VC might be tough as you have to work in a small team of six to seven people, which would be outsource intensive. Before I made a move from the corporate world to an investor, I had to prepare myself well.”

The move might also see people unlearning many things. “In a big company, you have a specialist in every area, but as a VC you have to reach out to consultants rather than the team, and this again is a project by project engagement. You have to have a firm grip on multiple areas as you have to identify and invest in the growth areas,” says Goyal.

Sunil K. Goyal is the CEO & Fund Manager at YourNest Angel Fund, prior to which he donned several leadership roles at Bharti Airtel. YourNest Fund is a domestic venture capital firm with about 100 crores under management, with a typical investment holding period of 4-5 years.
