Deshpande co-founded the company along with Daniel E. Smith in 1998 to build optical networking products. It went public just within a year of its launch after introducing its first optical networking product. The company sold 7.5 million shares that showed a 9.6 percent interest in the company and raised $184.75 million. In August 2007, he resigned as an employee of the company, but continues to serve as Chairman of the Board. Deshpande served as the Treasurer and Secretary of the company from February 1998 to June 1999.
