Michael Dell: From Dishwasher to Computers
The First Jobs of the Revolutionaries
Michael Dell is the founder of Dell and the 44th richest person in the world. Though he was born in a well-to-do family, he applied for the high school equivalency exam at the age of eight. He started working as a dishwasher in a Chinese restaurant, and used his earnings to invest in stocks. While in college, he started selling subscriptions for newspaper, and used the data to identify an untapped customer base. He started selling computer disk drives from his dorm room and later started purchasing unsold IBM PCs to add additional memory and disk drives to them, thereby selling them at around 15 percent less than the retail price. His data research and his curiosity (he apparently disassembled his first computer to see how it works) made him start a very successful business venture in the field of computers.
