Selling Minor Girls for Domestic Help Witnesses an Alarming Rise in India

Dolon exposed the trading secrets, as he confessed many agents are functioning in Assam trying to lure young girls. They target the weak and the poor, promising them they would be given a job and later these girls would be sold in flesh trade or will be sold as bonded laborers.

The police were able to crack the case based on Dolon’s information by finding Mamuni’s child in Kothi. The mother’s cries finally paid off, as she got her daughter back.

The law in India prohibits employment of children below the age of fourteen. Namrata, the child’s employer was booked under child labor law.

Namrata also disclosed, "Initially the agent takes Rs 30,000-36,000. Then they come every month to collect the maid's salary of Rs 2,800".

Poverty alone in cannot be blamed for this situation; on the other hand the demand in urban cities for domestic help is the main reason behind child trafficking. Trafficking is a violation of human rights. Victims of trafficking often suffer from physical and mental abuse leading to social isolation.
