Raj Fernando's Chopper Trading: Where Business Merges with Philanthropy


Fernando has written many checks to organizations such as Whittier Dreams Foundation, a private foundation in Wheaton, to the Wounded Warrior Project which helps injured war veterans to start their civil life.

Pete Witko, infrastructure support lead at Chopper, joined the company in 2009 has once asked Fernando for few hundred dollars for the betterment of St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in Memphis, and when he received for the same, Witko said “I don't think he'd ever say no,” as reported by Crain’s Chicago Business.

The company sponsors Henry Suders Elementary school in west town, every Thursday around 30 school students enjoys pizzas and hanging out time in the company‘s gaming room while the students get homework help in company’s West Loop office.

The employees enjoy volunteering and strengthen their bond as a small step towards philanthropy. “The trend these days is, how do you let people use the engine of the business to solve social problems?” says Jason Saul, CEO of Mission Measurement LLC, a Chicago-based consulting firm. “If you really want to connect with an employee, it's where people can achieve their personal mission through work, matching donations was interesting 10 or 20 years ago, today; it's the ante for being in business,” added Saul from  this Week's Focus.
