Prominent Mythologies Behind Dussehra


Bangalore: Every festival will have its roots in myths, traditions or culture of a particular group of people in a given place. Dussehra, a festival dated back to 400 year depicts the victory of good over evil. The ten day festival which ends on Vijayadashami is celebrated in worship of Goddess Chamundeshwari who slayed the evil Mahishasura. There are many mythologies about the festival and here are the prominent ones as compiled by rediff

Lord Rama Kills Ravana

The most prominent one among the myths about Dussehra is Ravana being Slayed by Lord Rama. As per the belief Rama, the incarnation of Vishnu killed Ravana, the demon king to bring back his kidnapped wife Sita. This lays the base for the effigy of Ravana being burnt on the festival. The season also marks the onset of winter leaving the scotching summer behind.

The myth also says that Lakshmana, brother of Rama lit up the complete city of Ayodhya with thousands of earthen lambs to welcome the return of his brother, which later turned out to be the Diwali celebration.
