Medical Tourism
Medical tourism, also known as medical travel or health tourism refers to the rapidly-growing practice of travelling across international borders to obtain health care. Health and wellness tourism requires offering tourists the means to improve their health and their lives through physical, emotional, and spiritual experiences at the host destination and within the host culture.
Factors that have led to the increasing popularity of medical travel include the high cost of health care, long waiting time, the ease and affordability of international travel, and improvements in both technology and standards of care in many countries.
Many surgery procedures performed in medical tourism destinations cost a fraction of what they do in the first world countries. A liver transplant costing $300,000 in America costs about $91,000 in Taiwan. The emerging destinations include Israel (where about 15,000 foreigners travelled, bringing a revenue of $40 million), Jordan (with related revenues exceeding one billion dollars), and India (where the medical tourism sector is expected to experience an annual growth rate of 30 percent).
