Ford vs. General Motors
Famous Business Feuds
Ford was founded in 1903 by Henry Ford, while General Motors was founded by William "Billy" Durant in 1908. Ford was the early winner with Henry Ford's creation--the model T. Ford was leading during the 1920s, when Henry refused to change his beloved T, and fought by lowering the price. Eventually, GM led by improvements in Chevrolet, surpassed Ford, and Henry shutdown the plant for the Model A changeover. After this Ford fell behind GMs market-dominating machine created by Alfred P. Sloan. In the ensuing decades, Ford enjoyed brief periods of leadership (in the late 1980s and again in the 1990s), but GM stayed in the front, until it began to skid into its bankruptcy in 2009. Since then, the leaner and swifter GM has transformed into a fighting machine. But if the new Ford catches fire, it could swing events in its favor.
