Modi's 'Tough' Acts May Inflict Budget Discomfort for Middle Class

Railway fares: The Railway ministry, although in its roadmap for the new government highlight the immediate need for capacity expansion, realistic fare hike and additional funds for financial as well as qualitative turnaround of the Indian Railways,

Modi is learnt to be against the move as it will put an extra burden on people. So, the decision to raise the railway fare by 14.5 per cent and freight rates by 6.5 percent will be finalized only after Railway Ministers consult PM.
Minister for Railways DV Sadananda Gowda said, "Certainly; that (revising passenger fares and freight charges) is the need of the hour. Mallikarjuna Kharge, in the interim budget, proposed a hike of 5 percent in freight and 10 percent in passenger fares. He gave the Budget factoring in these revised tariffs, but did not implement them. Now, I am forced to do something because of the present situation of the Railways. I will now discuss with the finance ministry on the funding support." Reports ET. Gowda also added that there is a 'grave mismatch' between the income and expenditure of Railways.
