LS Polls 2014: 10 Most Interesting Facts about the World's Largest Election


Only 12 percent women candidates: Number of women candidates in Lok Sabha elections seems to be still witnessing low with just 12 percent even among parties like Congress, AAP and BJP. According to the lists of candidates announced so far by these three parties, just 133 women figure among more than 1,250 nominations declared by them. The figure is a far cry from almost equal representation for the women voters in the country's population. Overall, more than 550 women contested the 2009 general elections, accounting for less than 7 percent participation in the poll fray. This time around, AAP has fielded several women of repute as candidates across the country.

Introduction of NOTA: The Election Commission said that for the first time electorates across the country would be able to exercise the None Of The Above option for candidates in the 2014 polls.

Under the NOTA facility, an option to click will be provided in the EVM after the name of the last candidate in the list and the electors will have the option of not voting for anyone in the list. The NOTA was first made available to voters during the assembly polls held in Delhi, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Mizoram and this time it will be implemented all over the country. India is the 12th country to implement NOTA.
