Is Kerala's Women Power declining?

In Sugathakumari’s view women receive higher levels of work satisfaction and better work environment outside the state.

Another interesting finding of the survey is that more women than men with MPhil and PhD degrees choose to work outside Kerala. For every 13 women only 5 men with the same qualifications opt to leave Kerala.

The research was carried out by S Irudaya Rajan and K C Zachariah of CDS. The study is based on the data collected from 15,000 households selected through random sampling covering all 63 taluks of the state.

In Irudaya Rajan’s view “Unless we provide better economic packages and working environment to youngsters, the internal migration will continue.”

It is also pointed in the unemployment in Kerala can be due to the mismatch between academic curriculums and skills needed on the job.

We have been witnessing the huge number of nurses from Kerala who prefer to work outside the state. Now beside nurses Kerala is losing many accountants, doctors, advocates and entrepreneurs. The study shows that the number of women from Kerala who are working even in financial sectors, personnel departments and other allied services outside Kerala is more than the number of men from Kerala in these sectors.
