Indian Billionaires and Their Share of Controversies

Mukesh Ambani: On 11th March 2014, the then Chief Minister of Delhi, Arvind Kejriwal ordered the state anti corruption branch to lodge FIRs against Reliance Industries chairman Mukesh Ambani along with Petroleum Minister Veerappa Moily and former oil minister Murli Deora on the KG basin gas pricing issue. However, the issue has been vigorously debated in the public sphere long before. Reliance Industries won the bid to supply gas to NTPC from the KG-D6 block at a price of $2.34 per mmbtu in 2004. In 2007, Reliance Industries asked for a hike in the price. Subsequently, an Empowered Group of Ministers approved an increase in price and fixed it at $4.2 mmbtu. A number of bureaucrats raised objection to this. Even the CAG has pointed out irregularities. Mukesh Ambani and his company had a hard time explaining their stand on the issue.

Naveen Jindal: Delhi police arrested Sudhir Chaudhary, the head of Zee News, and Samir Ahluwalia, the head of Zee Business on extortion case filed by Jindal Steel Plant. On 25th October 2013, Naveen Jindal of JSPL had released a video recording of meetings between Zee TV and JSPL executives. He claimed Zee TV was asking JSPL to give advertisements worth 100 crore in exchange of which they will stop airing unfavorable news against Jindal Steel. At that time, Zee TV was airing the CAG report that named JSPL as one of the beneficiaries of illegal coal block allocation. Zee TV headed by Subhas Chandra had at that time sent a 150 crore defamation notice to Naveen Jindal for spreading lies and maligning its reputation.
