India: The Favorite Destination of Bangladeshis

The largest group of international migrants living outside their region are South Asians. Most preferred moving to the oil-producing countries of west Asia

The report said that more people were shifting to countries abroad from their land of origin. About 3.2percent of the world's population are international migrants in 2013, when compared to 175 million migrants in 2000 and 154 million migrants in 1990. Continents like Europe and Asia have hosted about two-thirds of all international drifters.

John Wilmoth, director of the UN-DESA's population division, said, "This growth was mainly fuelled by the increasing demand for foreign labour in the oil-producing countries of western Asia and in south-eastern Asian countries with rapidly growing economies, such as Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand."

The US has topped the list with 23 million international immigrants and United Arab Emirates recorded the second highest with seven million, followed by Spain with six million.

With concern to this, Wilmoth said, "Most international migrants settle in developing countries but in recent years they have been settling in almost equal number in developed and developing regions."
