India Scores Low on Hunger Index

The report said "Despite years of robust economic growth, India scored worse than nearly 25 sub-Saharan African countries and all of South Asia, except Bangladesh," The GHI has used three factors to measure hunger. The first one is undernourishment, which estimates the amount of undernourished people in percentage out of the total population. Second is Child underweight, measures the proportion of children less than five years and last is child morality of children below five years.

The author Arundhati Roy has remarked on the hunger index bringing out the reality of two types of Indians, the rich who get acknowledged for their death as in the case of the Mumbai terrorist attack, where as the ones who die of poverty and hunger don’t even make it for the cause. The author’s concern acts as a clarion call for the drastic hunger situation which barely gets the required consideration. She also brings to attention the amount of time spent by media and politicians over war and mayhems to control the acts than the impoverished Indians, as mentioned on riazhaq.com

The report has also given the measures that can be used to control the situation, with all the required information on preventing these conditions. However whether it will get the attention it deserves is vague.

It’s clear that the food security in terms of availability of land, water and energy stress is the biggest challenge. But with the appropriate path to deal with it as described in the report can allow each country to meet all the challenges to perpetuate and support life in an affordable and prolonged way. The real challenge is for the builders of the country to act and give their attention to the deserved, not just by admitting the problem but work to eradicate it.
