India Lacks Transparency Laws in Healthcare Industry Dealings

In the U.S. law, the healthcare sector is required to report every year to the secretary of health and human services regarding payments or gifts transferred to doctors and coaching hospital.

The information is expected to be ready by the coming year. Countries like Slovakia and Belgium too are reported to pass a similar law. In Belgium, organizations having marketing authorization should keep track of all gifts or freebies offered to physicians.

But in Germany, there are no such laws but there is a demand for prison sentences of up to three years for physicians who accept freebies as bribes.

Among all these moves for a transparency in a healthcare industry, the government of India still continues to pay a deaf ear to the proposal of parliamentary committee on health, the Medical Council of India and several physicians.
