Food Bill, not for Dalits and Tribals?

The rural development minister Jairam Ramesh has sent across letters to 26 chief ministers and the administrator of Daman and Diu, in quest of positive initiative to detect omissions.

The variation in population figures of SCs/STs is seen as sensitive because it engages the sections likely to be poor and obvious candidates for the poverty list.

Social justice minister Selja insists the Planning Commission to consider dalits as poor except those paying income tax and those who are government servants.

The fewer numbers of SC and ST in socio-economic survey could be due to absence of household at the time of listing. As a solution to this, the RD ministry has urged the states to revise the analysis once again so that not a single family of the poorest section is left out.

To make it easier, states have been asked to verify that all SC/ST households participate in the gram sabha meetings so that if they are left out, they still gets the chance to cross check and file objections.
