Criminals, Crorepatis & Non-Graduates: It's Indian Politics


32 out of 70 MLAs are crorepatis in Uttrakhand assembly and 271 out of 402 elected members from UP have assets worth beyond one crore. The crorepati club swelled over the years and UP had the highest leap in numbers as there were only 124 (30 percent) crorepatis in 2007 which went up to 271 (67 percent) in 2012. Uttrakhand has a 30 percent increase from 2007 when it had only 11 members (16 percent) with wealth more than one crore and now there are 32 crorepatis (46 percent) in the assembly. Corepatis in Punjab assembly rose from 66 percent (77) in 2007 to 86 percent (101) in 2012. There are over 315 crorepatis, out of 543 members, in the Lok sabha and Rajya Sabha has 100 of them.

The average asset of a state MLA from Punjab is Rs 9.92 crore this time! The wealth of these MLAs increased by 60 percent (Rs 3.43 crore) on an average from 2007 to 2012 while the average asset growth of Uttrakhand MLAs are Rs 1.47 crore (177 percent). Uttar Pradesh, the members of the assembly has an average asset growth of Rs 2.09 crore (213 percent) and in Goa, the numbers grew 171 percent at around Rs 4.58 crore.

According to the affidavits, there are 22 legislators in the Pujab Vidan Sabha, with criminal cases pending against them, of which 8 of them have serious cases against them including charges of murder, extortion, kidnapping, theft and robbery.
