Cities Have Less Working Women than Villages

With such poor rate of employment among women it yields high unemployment rate which is 12.5 percent unlike 3.4 percent in case of men.

The Worker Population Ratio (WPR) at all India level is calculated to be 50.8 percent. When considered separately the rural areas estimate WPR of 52.9 percent and in urban region its 44.9 percent.

The results of the survey not only help to estimate the employment ratio in rural and urban but also assist in working out policies for gender equality.

The estimate for accounting the labour force is based on a liberal and biased pattern, that is, any person seeking or available for work for as less as an hour in a week day before the day of the survey, fall in the labour force category. Even with such liberty many women particularly house wives and students don’t add to the labour force population due to uncertain issues, which needs expert attention.

In the state level data it is seen that the lowest LFPR for women as per the UPS approach is in Punjab, estimated as 80 persons in 1000 persons, UP is second with 90 persons, in Haryana it is 93 persons, J&K shows 122 persons and Delhi with 143 persons. The reason for such low LFPR in villages of Punjab and Haryana is most probably due to the traditional customs in these Northern districts where women don’t do field work.
