Bangalore: Bound by the “parallel cinema tag”, women-centric movies now seem to be striding a thriving path as commercial cinema. Women might have played various roles on-screen – be it of a vulnerable mother, an acquiescent wife, stanch girlfriend and even an overlooked sister, but film makers like Shyam Benegal, Vishal Bharadwaj and Sanjay Leela Bhansali have broken the typecast and presented them in more practical and pragmatic way, and have been successful too.

Here’s a list of such women-centric movies made in the past decade that have ruled box-office or garnered critical acclaim.

The Dirty Picture:

The most recent bollywood blockbuster, Dirty Picture garnered critical acclaim as well as commercial success. Starring Vidya Balan, Emraan Hashmi, Naseeruddin Shah and Tusshar Kapoor; the movie is an unofficial biopic of Southern se symbol Silk Smitha, her rise to fame, heartbreaks, affairs and downfalls. Directed by Milan Luthria, the movie shows Vidya Balan as Reshma/Silk in itsy bitsy cleavage showing blouses performing raunchy dance numbers. The powerful and crisp dialogue delivery and easy portrayal of the character took the attention away.
