Will Titanic Sink Again?

Bangalore: The widespread acceptance of social networking sites shows that the dependency on cloud computing has increased to a large extent. A recent survey shows that the cloud market has already passed $37.8 billion and will reach to $121.1 billion by the year ending 2015. The prospect of cloud computing market looks more promising with the increasing mobile device usage.
The cloud allows for improved IT resources optimization, unlimited scalability and greater flexibility, all at a contained cost resulting in more adaption spreading rapidly and presents new opportunities. Expectations about the merits and implications of cloud computing are different from organization to organization. One of the major benefits provided by cloud computing is the cost effectiveness which many organization floors for during selection between on-premises and cloud computing.
"Clients concerns are security, reliability, availability of support and overall cost of the solution. When clients look for cloud based solutions, they wanted to know how reliable is the solution and the vendor. If sufficient support and data security is in place, they don not have issues in considering the cloud based solution," says Pranav Tej, Director, DATASiSar, an IT Solution providing company.
But the recent crash of Amazon EC2 cloud computing services which brought down many popular services, Reddit, Four Square and Twitter to name a few, for a couple of days, has raised the 'Titanic question' - How safe is the increasing dependency on cloud computing?
The use of Cloud Computing allows data transmission to become quicker and easily manageable increasing the dependency on the datacenters by the emerging economies, which reflects their apprehension towards a source that can provide them with safety and security.
"The recent Amazon cloud crash has had great impact on the consumers with many prospective consumers postponing their idea of ado public cloud. India still has to take up cloud, but such incident will weaken the market and the consumers," says Sumeet Anand, Founder and CEO, Kreeo, a platform technology provider.
In India, the consumers using public cloud computing are largely the small firms, as it is economical for them to go for a public cloud rather than creating an on-premises data storage system. But medium and large companies largely depends upon on-premises data centre as it is economical and reliable. "To catch the big fish in the net, we have to provide them with sufficient security and reliability properties. But for that, first we have to create a market of confidence," says Anand.
Experts cite that lessons should be learnt from this incident rather than evolving fear in our mind. We should always remember that there is no such thing called as 100 percent reliability. We should prepare alternatives or better options as this may happen again but may be for different reasons. Hybrid clouds, which consist of a larger portion of private and less of public cloud, are an emerging trend in the recent cloud-computing arena. Adding to these thoughts, says Tej, "Depending on one technology vendor will not be a good option for storing data. The customers can opt for a hybrid solution cloud which on-date only few top technology vendors practice such high security. We inform our customers upfront about the level of reliability and available options during the time of disaster."
Every coin has two sides. Instead of blaming the vendor for the breach of trust, its better if the customers do a bit of research before they opt for their services. The customer should look into the company's portfolio with whom the vendor has collaborated as to unearth if they are eligible to provide with proper customer satisfaction. "Brand name is an important factor when it comes for selecting a public cloud as per se in terms of reliability and security. Companies need to become a brand before they go for big customers," says Anand.
The players need to develop confidence in the market by providing the customers some remote connectivity to the data storage and others to be handled by the players remotely. This will help to leverage the cloud computing market in India and level it to the world standard.
