Video traffic to kill internet by 2010
New Delhi: The video had dimmed radio's popularity and soon it may prove fatal for the internet too. The unprecedented increase in the internet traffic, especially of video applications like YouTube and Hulu will clog the web world by 2010, as per a study. The study by the analyst firm, Nemertes Research Group maintained that after the advent of the Web 2.0 the traffic generated in 2006 by YouTube, was more than what was generated by the entire Internet in 2000. Telecom companies in both Britain and America are already investing significant amounts in order to upgrade Internet infrastructure, including the last mile cable, to increase capacity. At 50-60 percent a year, the current growth of Internet traffic is enormous. There are also speculations on the engineers' effort to replace the Internet with a superfast grid, if capacity updates fail to keep pace with demand. However, it is the rate of investment in capacity upgradation which will have to be fast enough to cope with rising demand.
