The 100 Crore Club of Bollywood
Bangalore: The bar of 100 crore has been set as the new yardstick for successful Bollywood movies, reports Nandini Raghavendra of the ET Bureau. With 10 movies to have reached this mark, the “100 crore club” is becoming the in thing of B-town.
Movies like Singham, Golmaal 3 and Agneepath have proved that apart from the dominant Khans of Bollywood, other actors can also become members of this exclusive club. Apoorva Mehta, Chief Operating Officer at Dharma Productions, says, "A 100-crore figure is really an indication of the growth in the business itself. In equal measure, it reflects the power of a film having pan-India appeal. Traditionally, the 100-crore club has been dominated by the Khans. But with the third non-Khan film crossing the figure, there are definite signs that content is working in totality."
Siddharth Roy Kapur, CEO of UTV Motion Pictures, says, "The two major contributors to revenue growth are higher average ticket prices and broader theatrical distribution. Having said that, theatrical contributes only 50 percent to a film's overall revenues, with satellite, music, home video, overseas rights, new media, digital rights and other smaller revenue streams making up the rest."
Moreover, additional help comes from sources, such as – increased number of multiplexes, revamped single-theatres, wider reach of digital media, low-cost movie prints and day and date release of movies to fight piracy. Producers and movie distributors also earn a handsome chunk from these movies. The movies belonging to the “100 Crore Club” are as follows -
