Terrorists' new target: Hire unemployed techies

By SiliconIndia,Sunday, 10 January 2010, 18:20 Hrs
Bangalore: At the time of recession, when most of the top IT companies slashed lakhs of jobs; techies took another step to earn money and joined different terrorists groups across the world. Indian security agencies say that the recruitment of techies was maximum in 2009 when recession hit the world.

According to the research done by, European sociologists Diego Gambetta and Steffen Hertog, who surveyed over 400 terrorists, including 25 men involved in the 9/11 attack, found that 44 percent were engineers. Intelligence Bureau (IB) said that that recruiting techies for terror operations has become quite a common phenomenon world over. It was first started by the Al Qaeda when it undertook the 9/11 attack. However, the Lashkar was quick to pick up this plan and gradually the Students Islamic Movement of India and the Indian Mujahideen, too, followed suit.
Terrorists' new target: Hire unemployed techies

Among all the terrorist groups, the tech cell of the Lashkar and the Al Qaeda is probably the most important wing. Al-Qaeda tops the list with over 400 techies while the Lashkar has nearly 200. These groups hire these engineers mainly for bombing, hijacking and also hacking operations. IB sources said that last year Laskar had picked up nearly 60 techies. Cadres in the sleeper cells have worked round the clock last year to pick up techies who were desperate and looking for jobs. Security experts say that the recruiters wait a long time until the person becomes desperate for a job. These groups take advantage commitments that these techies have and later with a blend of religious brainwashing they manage to attract them into the fold.

In the current situation, the bigger problem is that these terrorist groups may use them to launch a cyber war which is deadlier than any other form of an attack since it can cripple the entire economy.

1: I will throw newspaper, wash dishes, serve has house maid or worst case scenario commit suicide but never join a terror organization.

If I cannot make something, I will not break anything.

Someone who joins a terror organization is a sinner. Dharti ka bojh. Forget them and leave the rest to God.

3: I do not know how far it is true. However, my suggestion is that our Government can set up its own IT unit and employ techies directly in that unit for developing/maintaining its own requirements. This would help the government to save money to avoid paying huge amount towards software development/maintenance to the private companies and other side, it can safeguard IT employees like the staff of Central government employees.

6: Sine the seats in Govt.institutions are very low as compared to the demand of time.So new generation vigorously heading towards private institutions and paying heavy fee and after that if they do not get succeed to get a job ,the pressure, that arise from their peer groups, family or from society leads them to be the part of these non-ethical activity.Because in our country name and fame is most important than to have real ability .

7: Only those persons/engineers becomes terrorist who are lazy to work and don't want to labour hard. Their lifestyle becomes so costly that with low wage they failed to maintain it once they loose job. That is why they become part of this terrorist wing to earn quick money without laboring hard. I would suggest a best idea for job losers and engineers that after loosing your job, go to ur village and do farming. Built a hut in middle of your land and leave a peaceful life, instead of get trapped in terrorist hand. Though you will earn less, but then also you can leave a peaceful life. Don't get washed aways with the glittering light of metro city and terrorist organizations. It would take you no where.

12:Thanks for sharing this view and this is a great statement. When would man learn to live with SHARAM. We all exist on this planet Earth because of the Power of Mercy, Compassion, and Grace of the Creative Force or Energy. Techies, software engineers and all others should be ashamed of themselves if they have to violate the very same spirit that protects, preserves, and sustains their own existence.

14: Yes this is true and a genuine idea to work smarter. This is like making powerful weapon with powerful shield. I hope this should not happen, when we see the situation into consideration this may happen. For kind information last week a survey stated that 80% of terrorists were engineers. Eg : Oshama- Engineer with honours.

15: Its just obsolutely nonesense. How he can meet terrorist and do the survey. If so Why he couldnt inform to the Police Dept or IB?. Hence I believe Dieoga is one of the terrorist among them. Need to be investigated him first.

16:Good question for Ministry of Home Affairs. You know how journalists approach Bin Laden and other terrorist for their statement and why our secret agencies fails to question them about your querry. I think Journalist can do anything and have access to every person be a terrorist or President of India. There must be code of conduct for these journalist while dealing with terrorists who use media for publicity.Be Journalist and get front seat at any VVIP gathering with no income tax.

17: in the present day world life is so copetative it is necessary to keep earning what ever may be it is - result of recession people are joining any organisation irrespective of the task of the organisation - The Govt. responsibility to work for the result just issue the reports of intelligence dept.only WORK OUT INTELLIGENTLY TOO
Posted by: asrbnin - 11 Jan, 2010

18: hmm wonder what exactly qualifies a person as a "techie" in this context? Obviously a bunch of religious zealots wouldnt know great code or "engineering" if it fell from heaven and landed on their prayer mats... and the very belief in a huge invisible god is contrary to intelligent behavior as evidenced by the fact that most professional scientists, engineers, and programmers are atheist or agnostic.

20: This is very sad to read. The well educated people are moving to wrong hand and are mis-used against good people and society. There are plenty of opportunity across th glob to work in different field to enhance the economy of country and help the society to grow for better. Brotherhood is bigger than any religion.

Coporate sectors and governments in developing countries like our India has to do more for creating social awareness program to educate the people. More counselling centers should come to help those people in stress.

So please keep helping all unempolyed people in increasing their knowledge and going towards right ways.

There are lot of oppurtunities. And in the same sillicon india news I have read that companies are looking for skilled personals. They are finding a huge gap between skill requirement and skill availability.

Lets continue to do this job.

28: I would like to point out that if 10$ of the techies in india joined the terrorist group, dont forget that we the rest 90% is here to stop them. The most active group will be techies through the technologies and via internet so dont worry. Over all i dont believe this is true and i strongly believe that this is just a politic gimmick to turn the attention from the actual terrorist to the techies, while the actual terroris who plays safe with the politicians will pass through.
Posted by: Terminator - 11 Jan, 2010

29:I aggree that over 90% are still against 10% but don't forget that even if you are a techie and you are a hacker you can not go to govt and tell them that you are a hacker and you want to help them. Belive me dear they will not hire you and infact if you say you are a hacker the first thing they will do is put you in the jail. Now the second point is our of 90% good techies 98% techies are working in some corp company for big bugs. So, they even don't care about this issue. Third all the govt emp are very old in age and they don't learn new stuff each day (Go to any govt office and see yourself that how they work on their system, its like they have just started learning computer). I think govt have to change their policy and work with younger generation to solve this issue.

33: I think we need to ask some questions here - to ourselves, to authorities. Who created recession? Has there been a recession in the past? If yes, what followed recession? What is terrorism? Who are the terrorists? What do they want? Who they work for? What is religion? How each religion was attacked at different period of time? When you get the answers you realize the pattern is same. They follow the same pattern, however each time the targets have been different. You realize it's an outcome of a bunch of people trying to take over entire human race and make them slaves. What you see around is full of deception. It is the world that has been pulled over your eyes to blind you from the truth. And the truth is "You are a slave NEO"

35:You are right,
Un-employed, for money or may be accidentally Not mentioning exceptional cases who is having leniency towards terrorist elements.
But I dont think techies will join in this due to recession effect, and if any, they might have joined knowingly, exactly knowing what they are doing and what the effect it make.

No I think we create terror our self in our heart. Everybody and News channel said that this matter was happen by AL-Qaida etc. and we believe that news and things. I ask to all people who believes that news and matter have you ever seen AL-Qaida and to Laaden. Any army or any news channel has seen them if yes then why they not finish them. I am unable to understand about terrorist from where they come and who are them .who create them and what the regions they become terrorist. I think its totally a game but I dont know who play it. i dont thing so which I am saying it could be wrong. But I have some confusion abou that who are behind it could anybody tell me the truth if anybody has some idea about it..so plz tell…

And also i agree with author of this message that it is true.
