Intel invests in 23 Companies

Bangalore: Intel, one of the largest chip manufacturers announced that it will be doing bulk investments in 23 companies of which at least three operations will be based in India. The company is investing about $77 million on 18 operations. Shufflr.tv, BuzzInTown and Verismo are the three operations that will be based in India. Althea Systems, a Bangalore based social video browser has launched its Adobe Air based application Shufflr.tv Shufflr.tv provides a clean interface for discovering new content, and has content deals inked with NDTV, Reuters, CNBC-TV18, BigFlix in India, the BBC and MSNBC in the UK, and also with Brightcove which aggregates a large number of content providers. Shufflr works on large amount of video streaming that are available on the Internet .Around 36,000 hours of content is uploaded every day. They're also aggregating content from YouTube, DailyMotion, Metacafe and Yahoo Videos, are in talks with STAR TV, and working on breaking into the larger U.S. based customers. They also intend to rollout video distribution on smartphones, tablets and TVs. The bottom line of the company is to focus on the global market. Intel has further made undisclosed investments in Wortal which owns and operates the India based events listing site BuzzInTown. It has recently rolled out a daily deals service as well. BuzzInTown, which lists events taking place across 18 cities in India, including books and exhibitions, concerts, movies, theatre, sports, etc, is now monetizing to push news letters on a weekly or daily basis. Verismo Networks is among the new investments from Intel Capital. Verismo enables Original equipment makers (OEMs) and multiple system operators (MSOs) to offer Internet content browsing to TV. In Bangalore, Verismo powers provide content service for IPTV service provider Atria Convergence Technologies, which is among the first MSOs in the country to launch IPTV services. The full settop and IPTV headend technology comes from Verismo as well. Apart from these three, possibly the most interesting investment is in the Netherlands based Layar, which is a platform for mobile phones, which allows viewing of local business information and location based games in a completely new way, with layers of content. Layar has nearly 1,500 layers for users to view information for Android, iPhone and Bada.
