Indian-origin shares Nobel Prize for Chemistry
By   siliconindia news bureau
Wednesday,07 October 2009, 04:25 hrs
London: Indian-origin Scientist Venkatraman Ramakrishnan shares the Nobel Prize in Chemistry this year with Thomas A. Steitz and Ada E. Yonath, it was announced in Stockholm Wednesday.

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said that the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for 2009 awards studies of one of life's core processes: the ribosome's translation of DNA information into life. Ribosomes produce proteins, which in turn control the chemistry in all living organisms. As ribosomes are crucial to life, they are also a major target for new antibiotics, it said in a statement.

Born in 1952 in Chidambaram, Tamil Nadu, Ramakrishnan did his B.Sc. in Physics (1971) from Baroda University in Gujarat and later migrated to the U.S. to continue his studies where he later got settled and attained U.S. citizenship. He earned his Ph.D in Physics from Ohio University in the U.S. and later worked as a graduate student at the University of California from 1976-78. Ramakrishnan, now a Senior Scientist at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge has authored several important papers in academic journals.

Ramakrishnan and Steitz are U.S. citizens while Yonath is from Israel. Ramakrishnan joins an illustrious list of Indians and people of Indian origin, who have won the Nobel Prize in various disciplines - including Rabindranath Tagore, C.V. Raman, Hargobind Khorana, Mother Teresa, S. Chandrashekhar and Amartya Sen.

Ramakrishnan, Steitz and Yonath have been awarded for showing what the ribosome looks like and how it functions at the atomic level. All three have used a method called X-ray crystallography to map the position for each and every one of the hundreds of thousands of atoms that make up the ribosome.

"Inside every cell in all organisms, there are DNA molecules. They contain the blueprints for how a human being, a plant or a bacterium, looks and functions. But the DNA molecule is passive. If there was nothing else, there would be no life," a statement from the academy of sciences said.

The blueprints become transformed into living matter through the work of ribosomes.

An understanding of the ribosome's innermost workings is important for a scientific understanding of life. This knowledge can be put to a practical and immediate use; many of today's antibiotics cure various diseases by blocking the function of bacterial ribosomes. Without functional ribosomes, bacteria cannot survive. This is why ribosomes are such an important target for new antibiotics, the statement added.

This year's three Laureates have all generated 3D models that show how different antibiotics bind to the ribosome. These models are now used by scientists in order to develop new antibiotics, directly assisting the saving of lives and decreasing humanity's suffering.

12: First a pat on the back to Mr.Venki, we are very hapy over your acheivement. By 'we' I dont mean the Indians instead the fellow humans. What's the need to complain about brain drain. Infact if he had been in India the possibility of his achievement is less. I hope no one can disagree with me. Though we have many well equiped instituitions such as IIT,IISC etc, the amount of time, money and energy spent on such research is less. This is because there nothing to profit from this type of research, thats what most of us think. We aim at learning for money or atleast we finlly end up in such a situation.Very few study in the perspect of gaining knowledge and continue to educate themselves. Only such kind of sustained passion leads to such recognition as Noble Prize as in case of all the Nobel Prize winners, a perfect example being Sir C.V.Raman. Think it over great achievements are done as a result of passion rather than good education.

27: First of all congratulations to Dr.Venky , as he is affectionately known . But i fail to understand the enormous wailing that comes along whenever any Indian abroad accomplishes anything . People like Dr Venky -wherever they do research on such fundamental sciences --like in basic building blocks of life -molecular biology --contribute to the advancement of knowledge which benefit the whole humanity --and it hardly matters whether they live and work in India or elsewhere . Where is the so called brain drain in this? All talk of Brain Drain in today`s world which , thanks to technology , is poor understanding and appreciation of the the way in which world is united now and knowldge is shared and developed beyond anything that existed in 1960s 70s and 80s --
All scientists who work on fundamental sciences deserve to be treated as brain banks wherever they do their work and there is no need to grumble and complain all the time .
The second point I wish to share with readers here is that there are lots of scientists and engineers in various organisations here in INdia who do excellent work and accomplish a lot --like ISRO , Atomic Energy , Defence and other labs and companies --May be they do not get any awards for their work --but that doesn`t mean they do not achieve anything here in India . Nobel or any other award alone is not necssarily the only sign of good work being done anywhere in the world .
Let us not always react only in extremes --like getting excited when someone gets an award --or endlessly wail when someone gets a shabby treatment --but just accept and learn to be happy when people like DR Venky accomplish such heights of excellence .
I particularly wish to applaud Mr. Krishna Prasad down here who has made some interesting and balanced comment --the only one of its kind.
Incidentally , I happened to study in Annamalai University during the time when DR.Venky did his pre university in Annamalai University in Chidambaram in 1968--69 --of course , I did my Engineering over there .

28: Dear Sir,

I am happy and elated but also sad and depressed. Happy because it is an Indian, elated because it is like the proverbial thumbs up against countries (read US, England, France, Germany, Japan etc) who view India poorly. But Sad and depressed seeing the Brain Drain and all the best brains taking education in India, but moving away from India for monetary and other benefits and thereby utlising their brain for a foreign nation, who takes advantage of us Indians' brain power and develop their nation. And after 60 years of Independence, we are still a "developing" country and not a "developed" nation.
IF ALL THE INDIANS FROM NASA, IBM, MICROSOFT AND OTHER SUCH MNC's COME BACK TO INDIA, THOSE COMPANY/ORGANISATION WILL BE CRIPPLED FOR SURE. INDIA CAN HAVE A BETTER ANSWER THAN THOSE ORGANISATIONS. BUT ALAS, FOR PERSONAL MONETARY GAIN, EVERYONE SELLS THEIR BRAINS TO FOREIGN NATION. PAINFUL. GOVERNMENT SHOULD EQUALLY BE RESPONSIBLE TO ENSURE SUCH BRAIN DRAIN DOES NOT HAPPEN AND COME UP WITH (A) BETTER INFRASTRUCTURE (B) BETTER BUDGET FOR RESEARCH (C) BETTER SALARY FOR THE SCIENTIST COMMUNITY.

ALAS, MY INDIA IS IN WANT OF SUCH TECHIES, WHICH IT DOES PRODUCE IN LARGE NUMBERS AND ALSO EDUCATES, BUT THEY FLY OFF TO OTHER LUCRATIVE OFFERS. IS ANYBODY LISTENING?

48: It is all a politically, destruction .When I was in my pre-engineering class(non-medical),there was a lot of frustration. The reasons:-(A)College teachers were not teachers they reacted like a policeman. They never relished teaching like now. They had no interest in teaching the tough subjects rather perform to finish the syllabus.(B)There were only two Engineering college in the state. Presently these are more than 125.Most of the students use to leave the college as they had not been able to get the admission in Engineering colleges. Students use to consider the arts subjects as defunct subjects. Presently, it is good that every one can get admission in Engineering college there by decreasing the drop out rate. In our times competition was among the students at +2 level, those who could not get admission in Engineering colleges, use to leave the study and thus it was a wrong feature. Govt. never came forward that drop out rate is damaging to the nation. Now competition has shifted from the point of+2 class level(old times-pre engineering) to the point after passing graduation in engineering in order to find the job. this system is better than the system of our times.
(B)Education in our times was nonproductive as it is now. Syllabus is not tailored to the requirement of jobs-It is big frustration. Had the syllabus been tailored to the requirement of jobs, people would have not left the country.
(C)Peoples are not absorbed in research, here in India & thus they are compelled to leave India and whole zeal of gained education is spoiled most of the times .Thus brain drain takes place.
(D)A lot of hot issues are there in India for research leading to country's economic development. For example, Energy is the major issue global wise. Thorium is a nuclear fuel for Energy. World's 75% thorium is in India. In case India has been able to use thorium as a fuel, India would the richest country of world .But it needs thorium reactor. Govt. has not taken any step to intensify the research on the design/fabrication of Thorium reactor on war footing, from the last60 years. Govt. is not channelizing the energy of Scientists/Engineers by putting them on the job of research on the said reactor. A pocket of scientists/Engineers working on the side of URANIUM based reactors do not create any competition in research. Working in the field of uranium do not serves any purpose for India, as India has no Uranium
(D)There is no will of govt. to open Govt. Engineering colleges in the area of poor peoples, living in the villages. The reason is well known that govt./political peoples want to keep the village people poor so that these forces may easily keep hand over them for the built up of their vote bank on account of utilizing their poverty .So there is nothing to proud that somebody from India base has shared a noble prize. The whole game is a spoiled game by the political peoples in India. Many news were there in news papers regarding our president at the time of her appointment as a president. Why such news were not there against Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru , previous president A. P. J. Abdul Kalam or Lal Bahadur Shashtry? Why a plan is not brought in the parliament to open Engineering colleges in rural belts and research on thorium rector on war footing?

WITH BEST WISHES

64: I am truly proud of Dr Venkatraman Ramakrishnan to achieve the prestigious noble prize for his invaluable research which is applicable to all living things in general and human beings in particular. This is true form of leadership infact. Born in India studied in U S achieved honour in Stockholm. Leaders dont have boundaries and they create their own legacies. It has been proved time and again. The other surprise is that Dr Ramakrishnan has made his doctorate in Physics and has been awarded Noble prize in the Chemistry. This again proves that leaders need not have any limit instead they work beyond limitations. Each one of us has that potential and capabilites to prove ourselves provided we explore ourself beyond subjects and find our true value and nature. As per the great spiritual guru Swami Vivekanand a genius person uses less that 5 percent of his brain power. Interestingly all human beings have brains and it depends upon us, how we utilise it. If we learn to utilise in positive way it will give the excellent result and other way devastating result. Everything depends upon will power and determination along with dedication and devotion. It is said that where there is a will there is a way. Each Indian should try to make the positive difference to the self, community and socity. Then only we deserve to be superbrain in the world and finally superpower.
Once again, I bow to Great personality like Dr Ramakrishnan for his great victory and God bless him for his healthy family life and more similar success ahead.

76: Congratulations Sir.

I happened to read your quote in the Times Of India, Mumbai, this morning, where you have mentioned that there are a lot of brilliant scientists in India and Scientific Institutions of world class - like IISc, Bangalore - and that the climate for scientific research has changed for the better (compared to your time in India I guess).
I did a little bit of research on the kind of funding that research (institutions & subjects) that the Govt. Of India disburses each year. It's shocking that pure-science research, that in my opinion forms the bedrock for major innovations , finds less than 2% of all research funds deployed. It is no wonder that scientists (including brilliant minds that you refer to Sir) may find it more satisfying to look at opportunities abroad.

May I make a humble suggestion Sir, Mr Sam Pitroda has been appointed as Scientific Advisor to the Prime Minister of India (TOI, 08 October 2009) and it may be a great idea if a Noble Laureate like you could write to him and offer your services to help build a consultative team, comprised of eminent achievers in the fields of Scientific research to enhance the capabilities of Indian Scientists by funding research more adequately. I am sure given the emerging global businesses of Indian origin some kind of private participation at the University levels could also be worked upon - provided we have a think tank at the top that guides and validates such efforts.

Otherwise, I am afraid our country would become an "outsourced destination" for applied research for industries that work on breakthroughs achieved by scientists like you , Sir, whilst your fellow scientists in the country would be relegated to doing hack-work..

Once again Sir, congratulations from a fellow Indian who shares his roots in Tamil Nadu..

Sir, Indian Gvt don't bother on these assets. When they achieve smthing then they honoured. Why nt these people got satisfaction in India before going abroad. The reason is that that in India ppl & gvt take students very lightly in every matter utill they acheive something.

Still in India thosands of the Indian young brains heve been developed and still devoloping inversly proportinate to jobs available. What is gvt doing ....

95:The reason I believe is our Universities don't get that kind of funds for research and we it seems are also lacking in equipment. To be able to do this kind of research we need cutting edge technology. We got the brains..all we need now is money and the equipment and then we can have people like Dr. jagadessh bringing home the honour :) .

Congratulations to all of the three professors who have won the nobel price. Special congratulations for Prof Ramakrishnan.
I was always wondering how the codes of DNA and other RNA s and many biological entities store the genetic message, transmit, and replicate, mutate, improve up on,and how and what is the instruction to procreate, sustain, etc ...Altough I am a mechanical engineer, Biology has been one of the most facinating subject from childhood. I will study on my own and try to understand the new findings. Please forward literature to my E mail id pbagalkot@yahoo.com
Thanking you

101: My heartliest Congratulations To Prof.Ramakrishnan and your team sir.India has got abundant talent. The Government should seriously think and provide the basic requirements and should invest much on Research And Development. They should interact with eminent Personalities like Prof.Ramakrishnan.Keeping politics aside under the leadership of Dr.A.P.J.Abdul Kalam sir if Government starts a RND team.India will sure provide more number of Nobel laurets. And it also should provide technical education and infrastructure to rural places.Atlast i thank Silicon India team for their latest updates.
Thanking you,

103: Hearty Congratulations to Dr. Ramakrishnan. Though Dr. Ramakrishnan is born and graduated in India, the credit to his credential will obvously go to the USA, alone. In India, eminent scientists, like Dr. Ramakrishnan, have no say and autonomy to pursue their research work, as we are still entangled with bureaucratic wrangleholds and redtapism. Political will is another major set back. Indian scientists are not tuned to fill too many documents to seek grants for research work, and wait for the grant money , and face the Accounts department to answer their missing voucher queries.
