New Delhi: The Indian Railways have decided to take a slew of steps, including installations of CCTV based surveillance system and construction of boundary wall along with barbed fencing, to strengthen security apparatus at stations and ensure multiple screening of passengers.
Besides fencing of walls at major stations, Railways will install automatic vehicle scanners at entry gates. There will also be door frame metal detectors and baggage X-ray machines at platform entries to strengthen the security network as part of the Integrated Security System (ISS).
Railways are implementing ISS at 202 important and sensitive stations of the country in the first phase. "The ISS is scheduled to become functional at 76 stations by March this year and at remaining stations in 2012-13," said a senior Railway Ministry official.
The ISS provides for multiple screening of passengers right from the point of entry.
"The system comprising latest machines and software, will supplement conventional methods of security which are also being strengthened," he said.
There will be dedicated control rooms at strategic locations for round the clock monitoring through CCTV based surveillance system. The CCTV cameras will be installed in station area in such a manner that it covers the entire station premises including concourse, waiting halls, platforms, over-bridges etc.
The CCTV system will be internet protocol based and will have important video analytics which will give automatic signals in case of suspected baggage, excessive crowd and intrusion by unauthorized persons.
