India ranked 4th as world's most dangerous countries for women
Bangalore: Increasing human trafficking and continuous presence of female foeticide, infanticide has placed India as the world's fourth most dangerous place for women, as per a survey conducted by Thomson Reuters' Trustlaw Women, a hub of legal information and legal support for women's rights . Trust Law contacted 213 gender experts from five continents to rank countries by analyzing six risks. The risks were health threats, sexual violence, non-sexual violence, cultural or religious factors, lack of access to resources and trafficking.

In India, a whole gamut of human trafficking is run whereby women and girls are trafficked within and into India since they are most vulnerable into the sex trade. The enormous bulk of trafficked women and girls are poor, some belong to landless families, and most come from dalit, adivasi or other low caste communities.

In 2009, India's then-Home Secretary Madhukar Gupta estimated that 100 million people, mostly women and girls, were involved in trafficking in India that year.

In 2009 it was estimated by India's Central Bureau of Investigation that about 90 percent of trafficking took place within the country and that there were some 3 million prostitutes, of which about 40 percent were children.

The purposes for human trafficking in India are numerous such as forced prostitution, marriage, domestic labour, bonded labour, agricultural labour, industrial labour, entertainment, begging, adoption, drug smuggling and peddling and organ transplants.

The 2007 U.S. Trafficking in Persons report identified that the lack of co-ordinated national action undermines attempts to combat human trafficking. It recommends the urgent necessity to establish an effective national-level body to enforce the law strictly as these problems are made worse by the reported complicity of law enforcement officials in trafficking and related criminal activity.

As far as female infanticide and foeticide in India is concerned up to 50 million girls are thought to be "missing" over the past century due to female infanticide and foeticide according to the U.N. Population Fund. According to the report this problem is creating gender imbalances and other serious problems that experts say will have far reaching consequences for years to come.

Experts in India who have analyzed the National Family Health Survey 2 (NFHS2) estimate that about 300,000 girls go "missing" in India each year. Other studies have put the number between 150,000 and 500,000.

In India, where the child sex ratio is calculated as the number of girls per 1,000 boys in the 0-6 years age group, the problem is severe. The 2001 Census shows there are only 927 girls per 1,000 boys, representing a sharp decline from 1961 when that number was 976. In certain parts of the country there are now fewer than 800 girls for every 1,000 boys.

Apart from India, Afghanistan has been placed as the world's most dangerous country for women and Congo has been placed second due to the horrific levels of rape dominant there. Pakistan grabbed the third place for its increasing domestic abuse and economic discrimination and Somalia ranked fifth respectively due to its genital mutilation and acid attacks.

But if India wants to make its country worth living for women it will need to cover lot of aspects as far as security is concern. According to police records, over 400 rape cases have been reported in the capital in the year 2010 alone. According to the data, 18,359 rape cases were registered in India in the first three quarters of this 2010; hence, we need to provide an environment of safety and security to our women with strict implementation of the female centric laws that's in theory in our books.

Most of the stories of individuals interested directors: a logical combination of the scene to another to find a reliable way to point A to point B. Characters Non-Bay. This kind of continuity in the basic plot is not interested in him.
This sloppiness shows contempt for the audience. Perhaps the numbers most people are too slow to notice or these inconsistencies, but not for the others. "Ah, so there are no deserts in the suburbs of Virginia?" Nike air max 2006 shoes

7: Thomson Reuters where does US stands? and what ranking do you provide to US and westeren and or European countires? Read below

According to United States Department of Justice document Criminal Victimization in the United States, there were overall 191670 victims of rape or sexual assault reported in 2005. 1 of 6 U.S. women has experienced an attempted or completed rape. (according to Colorado Coalition Against Sexual Assault) The U.S. Department of Justice compiles statistics on crime by race, but only between and among people categorized as black or white. The statistics for whites include hispanic and non hispanic whites combined. There were 194270 white and 17920 black victims of rape or sexual assault reported in 2006. Out of the 194270 cases involving white victims, 50.6% had white offenders and 16.7% had black offenders, while the 36620 black victims had a figure of 43% black offenders, the remaining being of other or unreported race, with a negligible number of white offenders. Some types of rape are excluded from official reports altogether the FBI's definition for example excludes all rapes except forcible rapes of females, a significant number of rapes go unreported even when they are included as reportable rapes, and a significant number of rapes reported to the police do not advance to prosecution.

Having said the above, I agree that India does have a lot these problems, the femail infanticide and human trafficking in particular. But it is overstate to say that it is the 4th most dangerous place for women!

actually that would clarify the percentage risk of security/ declinig sex ratio as the root cause.

See indian women being disciplined is a virtue i agree but that is unfortunately also the reason for trafficking young girls and forcibly converting them to prostitution.
And i do not mean you change the good nature of indian woman but as stated above by me bring in different steps to tackle the situation.

Also this happens in all parts of the world not just in india. But india's big problem that is of girl child foeticide which is one of the main reason that it is ranked so above.

13: There's a terrific book everyone should share with their friends and age-appropriate children: "Sold", a harrowing first-person account of trafficking, rape, and being freed. It's by Patricia McCormick and it's the only book of its kind I've seen. Highly recommended for those who want to learn more about these issues. She traveled to India and Nepal, and spoke to the girls in these brothels. Proceeds from the book supports Anuradha Koirala's anti-trafficking organization, Maiti Nepal.

I completely disagree with this article. People, law and society every thing is pro women in India. With the few figures it completely wrongly conclude. I am from a village in Andhra Pradesh, I see lot changes in favor of women. Increase in number of Divorces cases is one of the key after effect of Women empowerment. Jayalalitha from South, Mamatha Bennarjee from East, Mayavathi from north Shila Deskshit from Capital, Sonaia Ghandi from Center, Pratibha patil on top together India is more empowered than any other country.

See here we are talking of India as totality.
There are areas like you say which may be pro woman.
But just look at the states of UP, Bihar, Madya pradesh,
Rajasthan village areas, And the Rape Capital of India
Delhi.

YOu should see that the total number of women being harassed is huge in these states. So it effects the overall
Image of India. Just talking of some regions like you mentioned is not good enough.

Well that issue of some women harassing men is also a big issue.
But here the talk is different and lets understand the truth that if 5 women are harassing men then atleast more than that no. of men are harassing women. So this issue is also important.
Child marriages are stopped by the law but how many areas are they implemented.

There are many laws in place but do you think all the laws are strictly implemented.
You are talking about one part of India not the Whole picture. If you take a picture that has a river in it, you cant say that the entire picture is that of a river.
similarly we are talking of india as a whole.

1 Need arrange the school curricula as early and honor girls
2 female foeticide must be under law punishment like death penalty or life-long sentence
3 infanticide also as will take under law likelife-long sentence
4 Need to go out from idea of DaltAdivashi etc
5 This is not for shouting but who capable to write pl. write in Dailies for awareness
6 Pl take some youth pilot initiatives that helps to free some zone that make example
So overall scenario is not only change by govt but need to civil society movement regardless of religions castes state etc.
And remember man is best of all creatures if man or female

23: Well Men all around the world need a constant dose of sex.
In USA and european countries women keeps changing their partners like dress. This makes men satisfied and there is no need for trafficking. In India & asian regions, most women have more respectable thinking and believe in monogamous relationship. So those men who don't have any relationship or those who are unsatisfied, they search for options. This makes women a marketable commodity unfortunately. When there is a demand then there is bound to be trafficking of innocent girls from remote places with the promise of a good money or jobs.
Solution is strict laws and it's implementation.
Providing platform for education & jobs in villages.

For the prostitutes ,Prostitution should be legalised and only authorised centres and people be allowed to function.

Govt. should increase security in transportation. CCtv's at locations near calm & lonely places.
Quick response team for women only.
And those companies implementing anti sexual harassment cell be given tax benefits.etc

In most of the villages where old style of "people panchayat" system exists, women will always get a raw deal in these panchayats.

For example why don't they
a. report about corruption and financial scams in US
b. why don't they rank US in terms of total dollar amount of corruption and
c. why don't they rank US in terms of women's actual rights given that US women get paid lower than their male counterparts, get discriminated in promotions for example Walmart case and do not get same opportunities in higher offices. South Asia and India has seen women head of nation states parliament etc. but all of this is very difficult for women to attain in the US.

It's hard to imagine that Thomson Reuters is impartial in its ranking and reporting. They certainly have other motives for maligning India.

Although infanticide is unforgivable crime for anyone to do including female infanticide count does not make sense upto a degree. 68: I am embarrassed to admit that men in India are pathetic. Go to any part of the country, you spot men peeing on road, gawking at women in frustration, spitting all over the place, abusing each other. The list is never-ending. Although there are exceptions everywhere, it is pretty easy to generalize the behavior of men in India.
Men in India assume that eve teasing is a cool way to express their masculinity. Men take women for granted. Men here do not understand that being physically stronger calls for greater humility. I believe that attitude towards life is the only factor to judge a person. Campaigning for women’s rights is not going to get to the bottom of the issue here. Men perceive women as mere sex objects. First of all, men ought to be educated to respect others from early years. Sad part is that even most women in India are all set to accept that men are superior just for the reason that they are well built. Entire society is brain washed.

69: Make sex free at India and the ratio would decrease a lot I guess.... Govt can also earn more form licensed prostitutes... Sounds wired but this is some thing that has to be done.. this may reduce the rape cases by a huge margin...

Mr. Ramesh ,

i feel you see the only threat to ladies revolve around sexual but to remind you there are other threats which are not addressed . we have villages too not only cities & the problem faced by ladies are very different & seems like ignorable . Safety means a lot not only safe from sexual abuse .

First of all i would like to speak few points in general about our Indian men. They r clever and no doubt on that, speak cleverly, think cleverly and act cleverly, but the point is that the actions all are wrong...No discipline at all in any given point..You go to any big shot in india, brain is small but talks are big...I admit money place an important role in india, but when money gives them power they act pitty and do not show themselves as role model...Bill gates started being a philanthropist but before that we have Mrs Narayan murthy who is a great philanthropist. Why can't men show the way to the younger generation these days...No kid these days considers any one as a role model from india (I assume and i may be wrong).
If Indian men can't protect indian woman then who else will do...Act intellegently and take credit for the actions...high time for indian men (Including me to raise the personnel ethical standards)...The more time they spend in office to prove themselves, they should also show more outside the office to improve our country....Hope i spoke my mind....

Why do Indian women need protection? and from whom may I ask? Precisely this attitude has brought us to this point.

may be the last but not the least, there is a saying "MEN ARE FROM MARS AND WOMEN ARE FROM VENUS" I think both genders should come down to earth to solve the issue. It means women shouldn't be too materialistic, and men should not try to show that they are too different and big achievers...

I believe, if some of live in denial the problem wont disappear, the idea is to see where the problem is and do something about it, if we close our eyes and say no no no a 100 times, the reality wont change unfortunately
