Bangalore: Congratulating the six winners of the Infosys Science Foundation Prize 2011, Dr.APJ Abdul Kalam suggested that researchers and scientists like the six awardees must be deployed across the country of India in universities so that they inspire the young minds of India. He said that Indian academic Institutions required Research professors who would once in two or three years would visit India to fabricate and instigate research culture in young aspiring researchers. According to Dr.Kalam, "Great minds are always a fuel to progress". He said in the past two years about 18 scholars were recognized and awarded for their exceptional achievements and breakthrough researches and such scientific, technological and economic minds were undeniably needed in India.

Dr.Kalam pointed out that one of the biggest challenges today for India in the innovation sector is fostering competent Research culture. He said "Applied and fundamental research is the crying need of the nation." He said if the Research culture had to be fixed in our academia and universities, Research scholars must be a part of them which would then confer solutions to our basic needs of our growing population, especially, clean drinking water, food, healthcare, energy, housing, infrastructure and education. Referring to the Global Innovation Report of 2011, Dr. Kalam said that if India had to move up the ladder from being ranked 62 into the top 10 list then India has to derive more technological products from Indian Science to improve its innovative index and global foot print. Smaller countries such as Switzerland, Sweden, Singapore and Hong Kong were listed as the top four countries. "As latest technologies will not be available for us from developed countries at least for a decade, innovative research is very vital, particularly, in basic science to develop products and services required to meet global competitiveness by organizations, institutions and industry," he said. He further said that humanity will only grow when a research and development mission is tailored in areas like water, agriculture, green energy, Information and communication, knowledge system and healthcare. "Great minds have purposes, others have wishes" and according to our former president, "Recycling of wastewater, sustainable agriculture and solar power were the subjects of interests for researchers in future to concentrate on. Dr. Kalam said. "There is a need for farmers, researchers, agriculturists, and researchers to intensify the quantum of organic farming. Science should also find methods to recycle for industrial and domestic wastewater and desalination of sea water using solar energy." Appreciating the efforts of the Infosys Science Foundation and the Jury members, Dr. Kalam gave out six prizes in to various research scholars who mastered in different areas. All six were given prize money of 50 lakh ($100,000), a 22-karat gold medallion and a citation.
