Indian engineer builds glaciers to stop warming
By   siliconindia news bureau
Wednesday,28 October 2009, 02:44 hrs

New Delhi: A retired Indian engineer, Chewang Norphel, 76, has built 12 new glaciers already and is racing to create five more before he dies, and by then he hopes to train enough new 'icemen' to continue the work he is doing to save the world's 'third icecap' from being transformed into rivers, reports Telegraph.

His race against time is shared by Manmohan Singh, the Indian Prime Minister, who called on the region's Himalayan nations, including China, Pakistan, Nepal and Bhutan, to constitute a united front to tackle glacial melting.

The Himalayan glaciers, including Kashmir's Siachen glacier, feed the region's most important rivers, as they irrigate farm lands in Tibet, Nepal and Bangladesh and throughout the Indian subcontinent. The acceleration in glacial melting has been blamed as the reason for the increase in floods that have destroyed homes and crops.

But Chewang Norphel, the "Iceman of Ladakh", believes that he has an answer.

By diverting melt water through a network of pipes into artificial lakes in the shaded side of mountain valleys, Norphel states that he has created new glaciers.

A dam or embankment is built to keep the water in, which freezes at night and remains frozen in the absence of direct sunlight. This water remains frozen until March, when the start of summer melts the new glacier and releases the water into the rivers downside.

His glaciers have been able to each store up to one million cubic feet of ice, which in turn can irrigate 200 hectares of farm land. This can make the difference between crop failure and a bumper crop of more than 1,000 tons of wheat for the farmers.

Norphel says that he has seen the effects of global warming on farmland as snows have become thinner on the ground and ice rivers have melted away.

His work has now been recognized by the Indian government, which has given him 16,000 pounds to build five new glaciers. But time is his enemy, he told The Hindustan Times. "I'm planning to train villagers with instruction CDs that I have made, so that I can pass on the knowledge before I die," he said.

"By diverting melt water through a network of pipes into artificial lakes in the shaded side of mountain valleys, "

sounds so simple but would have required some himalayan efforts! very innovative as well. only if we had Chevang's email address, we would have got to know his path towards this accomplishment...just shut up,miss, such people have time devoted more to self-action rather than self-appreciation.

Also i must say that every Indian Citizen if they watch 1 hr less of TV- Thrash & the thrash that Media shows and educate themselves in these very pragmatic Valuable Issues would save Billions and also the a Greener Earth. By & Large dumb people prefer Sas & Bahu Soaps Operas or Merry go round love stories. people Dont realize te Nature is going to Dogs.

This Man Deserves to be featured in National Geography. So that, Many across the Globe can take his example & move ahead. The Fact that this Hidden treasure was left unexplored till date despite technological advancements, itself shows the Media the in Dim light as such issues needs to be Glorified to its Hilt. Contrastingly the TV-Press-Most Media Prefers the Page 3 Talk & Fancifull H/T/B/All/ollywood Dinners, the simmers the murders and the much talked about the GFN Political Geeks in Broader spectrum w/o Much Ado.

Thank you Silicon India for taking up this case and blogging it. Its indeed a good way of showing your concern.

It is a great work for the retired Indian engineer, Chewang Norphel, 76,to take up such interesting and innovative project. The self determination and unfathomed motivation need to be appreciated by one and all.

His novel idea is one more way of producing water for the needy by saving those waters that are to be wasted.

Mr. Norphel should feel proud and extremely satisfied for his doings to the human kind.I wish him all the best to complete his target of 5 more glaciers in his life time and then very many more through his teachings by the inspiration he carries to millions of human beings on earth.
Let this note also seed the habit of saving any water the readers waste in their everyday use and calculate the amount they could save in their balance life for the shortage. This would be the best contribution they can do if not join Mr.Norphel.

Mr.Norphel will ever remain the symbol of inspiration for those who want to save water and contribute to the cause.

Mr. Norphel does not need praise or blessings but let this venue give him strength, health and let him continue to get the pleasure that he has been getting, making him happy and making others happy too.

My sincere gratitude to the young old man!

May God Bless you and your team.

I assume this method can be used in places where it gets below freezing and where there are plenty of water resources to channel to a place. Is rain water used? Can sea water be used?

I wish all of us, who have received excellent education from India, use the knowledge for world benefit like you.

may God bless you

90:Yes, friend, what an idea! This is what instills hope in people like us, like u and me that there are folks out there whom we can look up to, if possible go and meet, go and talk to. Sustainability has to be engrained in the minds of humans. Unfortunately, corruption and total disregard has taken its toll. Indians are no saints. They are equally to blame, howsoever we may complain about the west and its follies.
I am an Architect and I am apalled by the 'romanticising only' (of the issue) by some media people. Y'know, I have started out on certain websites myself (mentioned elsewhere on this page) on environment and I would like to proceed further on those..Good idea naa?!
Bye,

96: How come the Indian press and other news and mass media agencies are not playing this up in the world media and why it is, I have noticed only Indians congratulating him? Wonder if it is time to ask ourselves the question in such issues whether national boundaries physical and conceptual are preventing us from looking outward and showing what brilliant people like Mr Norphel can do for the World. One cannot escape the fact that India will not survive if Planet Earth doesn't. Cheers

Each one of us at our own level should do something to protect our own world. Plantation, cleanliness are such examples. After all, a huge mountain is made by only a small tiny sand particle.

122: I have read some where that people in Pakistan spread coal dust using helicopters on icy mountains to get water in the river for irrigation and transportation. They are also warned to not to do so. These black spots on ice absorbs solar energy and melts ice into water which finaly flows into rivers. The opposite of this is to keep mountains clean and coat them with white when no snow or less snow is there, that would delay in melting of ice. Only the tops of mountains attract ice and below ice one can see dark colored rocks and further below one finds vegitations so it is pracical to coat visible dark surface on mountains further to reflect sun light and reduce temperature of rocks substacially.
Many people visit Viekanand rock at Kanyakumri, a very fiew observe that walkway is made up of white coat for visitors to have comfort even barefooted, same way in Akshardham temple at Gandhinagar-Gujrat, a walk way and Hand rest on steps is coated white regularly for the comfort of visitors, this means people of India knew what is white and what is right but unfortunately an observing eye is missing among the mass.Use of Air conditioners must be restricted by increasing some type of duties on the product(s) and same must be returned back for applications like what done by Mr.Norphel. Also in many parts of world around equator white roof tops are applied to have comfort in houses and reduce cooling cost. Air chillers are gradualy imposed in our life in avery tricky way and howl to reduce global warning is sung in developed countries in chilled auditoriums and developing countries are supposed to apply the corrective actions. Any way only Indians can take suitable initiatives.

What if the automobile and other industries start questioning themselves, if they are partially responsible for the global warming issue and start acting on alternatives ? 1 or 2 years are enough if they act correctly prioritizing this issue.

What we are doing is melting some more ice keeping unnecessarily computers/TV/Lights/etc ON.

Our neighbour Maldieves is sinking into the sea due to global warming.

194:Please note that our neighbour Maldives , which is supposed to be submerged under the sea water after about next 560 years or so , have already started the process of "buying" other islands from neighbouring countries such as Australia ! "Survival instinct " , one may say ! What about us ? We are definitely going to have droughts and floods in coming years for sure but what big steps are we taking ? If engineers suggest "river linkages" or , say , our old man's action plan for "glacier preservation" then our khadi-clad politicians would just ignore those suggestions as technological "imaginations" ! The fact of the matter is every such technical solution to a collosal problem is gigantic in nature but a nation has to take up such challenges way ahead of the imminent disaster. Not like "planning" a solution after 26/11 like disaster by our "khaddar-clad" politicians whose capability of uplifting the lives of their subjects was doubted by Winston Churchill ! Jai Bharat !

But we safely pass the buck onto the government elected for having spent precious time standing in the sun to vote. We have built several engineering marvels that are recognized around the world so I believe if we can set aside sometime to think through,we can find simple solutions to various problems. Food for thought..

Bottom line is why bring this "Hate America" attitude into this matter too ? To add to the above has Mr.Chaturvedi also forgotten that Dr.Chandrashekhar and Dr.Amertya Sen who won Nobel as US and UK citizens are both Indians ! If we could do this in the Antartic and other places in the world with snow-capped peaks like the Alps, Rockies, Andes, etc it will be a great boon and benefit to mankind and not only to India and its neighbours. Surely the Global powers have the financial clout to make this happen without looking at political boundaries and leanings.

Many salute to the Oldie who proved the saying "OLD IS GOLD" a Truth once again. May god bless him all the time he has so that all mankind can get his best services.

Our government appreciated him but would not try to implement the same on a large scale even though all are aware that this is going to be a huge setback if not Caught in time.

It seems Govt of India has been really kind to him, however God only knows when he will actually receive the funds as offering is something different and receiving is entirely a different scenario in our Country, my suggestion to the Hon. Dr. Manmohan singh is - Once the Govt has offered funds Depute someone who is held responsible if funds are not distributed in certain time period.
If we recall several Army Jawans and officials have not been paid their DUES right from 1971 war onwards, has any Official or Politician looked on this issue till date.
