Chennai with 90.33 percent is the second highest literate metro city. The literacy rate among men and women is pretty good with 93.47 percent in men and 87.16 percent in women. With the population of 4.68 million it is the fourth highest populated city in India. Chennai’s economic base is rooted in the hardware manufacturing, computer and technology trades. It is also called ‘Detroit of India’ because of the major automobile industrial base.
The widely spoken language in the city is Tamil and it is one of the oldest languages of the world. The city has a rich and traditional history, which is still a part of its culture. It is a prominent hub for Indian classical music.
The city has worked on keeping a high literacy rate which adds to the development of the society at the same time adding to the country’s advancement and is an indicator of the economic growth.
