5 Pilgrimage Centres In India Targeted By Terrorists


Raghunath Temple

Raghunath temple in Jammu, probably one of the largest temple complex of North India was attacked by two suicide bombers on March 30, 2002.The incident resulted in the death of seven, including security people and around 20 were injured. Just few months later, in the month of November the same temple was attacked, killing 13 people while the devotees were performing puja in the temple complex. The terrorists entered the temple by diverting the attention of security forces with grenade attacks in the nearby Hari market and moreover they also blocked the escape ways of the temple. People became furious hearing the news and police found it really hard to control them, who crowded near the vicinity.

Ram Janmabhoomi, Ayodhya

The makeshift Ram temple in Ram Janmabhoomi site, where Babri Mosque first stood was prone to terrorist attack on July 5, in the year 2005.Five terrorists, believed to be from Lakshar-e-Toiba, posed as pilgrims and entered India via Nepal. One civilian died in the grenade attack by the terrorists; but all the five terrorists were shot dead in the gunfight with the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). BJP blamed the attacks on the centre and government of U.P and moreover there was a week-long country-wide protest following the incident.
