10 Most Literate Indian States


Himachal Pradesh:

Himachal Pradesh takes the fifth position on the list. It has a Literacy Rate of 83.8 percent as per2011 Census. Himachal Pradesh was under the direct control of the British colonial rule in the mid 19th century and therefore the standard of education provided in the state has reached to a considerably high level. The state has numerous highly reputed educational institutions for higher studies. The Indian Institute of Technology Mandi, Himachal Pradesh University (HPU) and the National Institute of Technology (NIT), NIT Hamirpur are few of the established institutions in the state. Further, Hamirpur District is among the top districts in the country for literacy. Education rates among women are also quite encouraging in the state.

Maharashtra:

Maharashtra is the sixth most literate state in the country. It has a Literacy Rate of 82.9 percent as per the 2011 Census. The male and female literacy rate in the state is 89.82 percent and 75.48 percent respectively.
