Rivalries That Made History In Women's Tennis


1. Maria Sharapova and Serena Williams

Rivalry between the duo is always the talk of the game. Sharapova and Williams have faced each other 19 times till date, and sometimes taken off the court too. While on court they both have an extreme level of handling the game at their best. But Williams on one hand is more aggressive in the way she puts up her game while Sharapova is a well composed player. In 19 matches they faced against each other 17 were won by Serena Williams but the matches between them are still the fiery ones.

The best match they put up so far was the 2005 Australian Open Semi-Final; where Williams came back from one set down to win the exciting match 2-6, 7-5, 8-6.

2. Serena Williams and Venus Williams

These two very close sisters are also one of the best known rivals on field. However the earlier games were dominated by the elder sister Venus later Serena has also put up a good game which made way for rivalry between the duo. Having said that, a Doubles match with Serena and Venus on hand is a feast to the eyes.

Their best match was when they faced each other in 2001 U.S. Open Final with a score of 6–2, 6–4 and this was the first time in the history of Tennis that sisters were playing against each other in a slam final and also it was the game that was fought at night.

3. Steffi Graf and Monica Seles

This is the best known rival couple from the 90s who lodges head to head game in all the slams and most loved by fans, it’s quite tough to judge who the best player is. The two met each other 15 times and ten of those matches were at finals in slams.

Monica Seles burst out on the Tennis stage when she won the 1990 French Open title against Steffi Graf who was already at the top rank. Steffi Graf and Monica Seles were the most adored and also the top players of the 90s.
