BENGALURU: With around 31 percent of small cars manufactured for the global market, India is one of the largest suppliers of automobiles in the world. The industry also accounts for 7.1 per cent of the country's Gross Domestic Product (GDP). By mid 2016, Indian new car trades are up 4% year-on-year to 1.413.386 units, positioning the Indian market just below the UK (1.420.636) in the battle for the 5th worldwide place below China, followed by the U.S., Japan and Germany. With a wide variety of variants being launched regularly by the manufacturers, there is a huge competition going on for the leading position. Maruti Suzuki Alto 800

India’s best-selling car for the last nine years, the Alto remains undisputed with an overwhelming market share to 46.4%. This was also the first made-in-India car to be the largest-selling small car in the world in 2014. The Alto 800 recently got an improved modification with its new headlight clusters, a new grill and a new bumper. The car is powered by the 0.8L three-cylinder petrol/CNG engine, with Automatic and Manual variants in the K-series. The company has adopted specially coated piston rings to reduce frictional losses and increase engine life and fuel efficiency in the latest editions. The latest Alto is claimed to be highly fuel efficient offering 24.7 Km/l in the petrol variant and 33.4 km/Kg in the CNG variant. A new brake booster claimed to improve the braking performance is also a highlight of the model.
