Soon 2-wheelers to Follow BS-IV Emission Norms

BANGALORE: After strengthening the four-wheeler norms, the Government is heading towards implementing similar norms on two-wheelers. In India, two-wheelers are more in number and are sold in a larger numbers every year. In addition to that, recent studies have claimed that two-wheelers emit oxides of nitrogen (NOx) nearly four to five times more than petrol cars, reports TOI.

According to the reports, there are high chances of Government implementing the stricter norms this week. The Road Transport and Highways Minister, Nitin Gadakari promulgated the timeline (April 2020) to put BS-IV emission norms into play. He also declared that these norms will apply to all the vehicles.

The exposure to NOx can cause decline of lung functionality and the NOx is mostly produced by the motor vehicles. In last fiscal year (2014-2015), the Government accounts show thatalmost 1.97 crore vehicles were sold in the country which comparatively in the previous year (2013-2014), there were much lesser 1.6 crore vehicles registered in the country.

The two-wheeler manufacturers denied the plan of stricter norms for NOx emissions in Euro-IV standards, as the fuel efficiency of the vehicles would plunge. A government official said, "Studies have suggested that pollution caused by two-wheelers is very high in cities such as Delhi. While we support the industry as it is a vehicle for middle-income groups, two-wheelers need to comply with stricter emission norms."

As per the BS-IV emission norms, the NOx emission limit for a two-wheeler is 0.39 gram/km whereas, a petrol car is limited to 0.08 gram/km. The Europe manufactured two-wheelers will receive much stricter norms with a NOx emission limit of 0.07 gram/km.

However, the BS-IV emission norms were applied since the New Year for four-wheelers, but the same will be implied on new two-wheelers from April 2016 and the existing two-wheelers from April 2017.
