International Launch of Pokemon Go Delayed

BENGALURU: The international launch of Pokemon GO, the free Augmented Reality (AR) mobile game developed by software development company-Niantic, has been halted due to server issues. Because of its popularity, the game is imposing unexpected load on the servers resulting in temporary suspension of the game’s global launch. The aim of the postponement is to give the software developers time to add more capacity to its servers. According to Business Insider, Niantic CEO John Hanke says that users in other countries might not be able to get their hands on the video game until the developer has enough servers to handle the capacity.

The game developed for iOS and Android devices has been released in July 2016, and according to App Annie statistics, Pokemon Go hit number 1 spot on Apple’s US App Store in less than a day. The game’s popularity has reached its zenith which is evident from a friendly tweet from Amazon CTO Werner Vogels, who suggested Niantic to use Amazon’s Web Services cloud-hosting service. “Dear cool folks at @NianticLabs please let us know if there is anything we can do to help! (I wanted that drowzee),” he tweeted. It is being assumed that the server issues will soon be resolved and Pokemon Go will be available worldwide.

The AR game lets users catch, train, battle, and trade Pokemon in the real world. The game uses GPS and camera in users’ smartphones to explore the real world in search of new Pokemon, and then capture those using Pokeballs. The game is currently available in U.S., Australia and New Zealand.
