Barcelos Burger Go Black In India

BANGALORE: "You can have it in any color—so long as it's black," said Henry Ford, founder of the Ford Motor Company in regard to Model T.

Burger chain in India are now taking it a bit too literal and may just follow suit as SA-based fast-food chain Barcelos released black burgers in the capital earlier this week, reports Economic Times.

The dark brooding snack stirred waves in Japan last year, while U.S. fast-food giants Burger King and McDonald's fought tirelessly over burgers that came in  black buns, black cheese, black sauce and black pepper beef buns. Stepping up to the competition, Burger King released its Black Kuro Burger darkened with bamboo charcoal whereas rival McDonald's went ahead in releasing its own colored version of squid ink.

On the other hand, Barcelos, which has only one store running in India at present, used a variety of food colors in sizeable proportions to bring out its unique variant "Somebody had to introduce it here and we did it," said Rohit Malhotra, the GM that operates, Barcelos India. "It is very beautiful to look at and during our introductory tasting session, people loved it. Till now, they had only seen it on the net." He said.

Black burgers were first introduced in Japan by Burger King in 2012 for a limited period of time.  It made its reappearance again in 2013 before setting out its array of Kuro (meaning black in Japanese) last year. Harish Bijoor a Bangalore-based brand expert said it is a strategy to break monotony "You have yellow and purple tomato ketchups in the U.S. In Bangalore, there is a restaurant that sells golden dosa," he said.
