BMW Plans Grand Opening for New 5 Series in January

BENGALURU: BMW has some good news for auto-fanatics: The automotive company is all set to unveil the seventh generation of the ‘5 series’ at the Detroit Motor Show in early 2017. Initially, the 5 series was expected to be released sometime this year, but due to few modifications, the dates have been shifted to January.

Although these next generation cars are expected to be bigger in size but less in weight compared to its their predecessors. Lighter weight is achieved due to the use of new Cluster Architecture (CLAR) platform – a type of Rear Wheel Drive (RWD) architecture – and other lightweight materials like carbon fiber and the carbon core in the body structure.

The 5 series will consist of three new models namely, BMW G30 (a saloon), BMW G31 (an estate) and BMW G32 (a hatchback GT). Apart from these three, BMW has also revealed its plans to release a plug-in hybrid variant – which has been given the moniker iPerformance.

The cars will come in a variety of four, six and eight cylinder petrol and diesel engines with displacements ranging from 2.0 – 4.4 litre. It may also be expected that the New 5 Series will have hands-off operation up to a pre-determined speed, a sophisticated anti-collision system and fully autonomous braking, among other features.

The new models will also offer optional gesture control, with a three-dimensional sensor mounted within the headlining to detect up to five different hand movements. BMW will also make available its latest voice recognition system, making the car more user-friendly and the drive more comfortable and safer than before.
