At 82, Donald Duck is Still Young and Charming

BENGALURU: For kids belonging to the 90’s and the generations that preceded them, Mickey the Mouse and Donald the Duck were the most beloved and entertaining characters - Two icons who influenced their childhood in many, happy ways. They were the best friends of a child who had no friends and they were also a part of big groups of children. There were no kindergartens, no home or pediatric centers where the two of them couldn’t work their magic. As the world celebrated Donald Duck Day (not to be confused with “the Donald” envisioning the destruction of his country) last week, let us look at this comedian, an otherwise fashion icon, and maestro who is an inspiration to millions and millions of people the world over.

In the year 1934 Walt Disney, who could not give Mickey Mouse any negative trait since he had become a cult hero to most kids by then, created Donald Duck. Nobody really knows where Disney got the idea for the character from but rumor has it that it came from one of Sir Donald ‘Don’ Bradman’s innings two years prior to Donald Ducks birth. It was the time when Bradman was touring North America. In a game against New York West Indians, Bradman got out for a ‘duck’. Disney, who was himself in search of ideas for the new character, found it amusing that such a legendary batsman had been removed for a duck by a relatively unknown team and decided that the character he is going to create, would be a duck and its name ‘Donald’.

Donald Duck has a fiery temperament. A happy, easy going creature who can and often does become very volatile and angry if ruffled. In spite of his nature, Donald has a very positive outlook to life and passes that on to his friends, even though in a very weird, peculiar and sometimes in a not so friendly manner. He is a bit of a prankster too when it comes to his three nephews and chip ’n’ Dale. He is happy when he is the one who is pulling the prank but when the tables are turned, it gets over his head and its all angry uncle Donald again. Donald also has a Mini to his Mickey in the form of Daisy Duck and he goes to great lengths in hopes of winning her heart.

Donald has the distinction of being the highest selling comic book character outside of the superhero world. That is a testimony to people’s love of Donald and how some people still revere him. Donald and his friends have made this world a better place and hopefully keep everyone happy and smiling for generations to come.

Happy World Donald Duck Day everyone!!
