Monkey Buffet Festival (Thailand)

The Monkey Buffet Festival of Thailand was established in favor of tourism. One must bear in mind that it isn’t just a buffet for monkeys; it is a grand fiesta for monkeys. In Lopburi, the population of macaque monkey is so large that it would be deemed a nuisance in any other part of the world.

Believed to be the descendants of a monkey warrior, these macaques are revered and are free to roam the streets. The so-called good-luck monkeys are believed to bring good fortune for which every year, in honor of their legacy, more than 2,000 kilograms of vegetables, fruits and monkey delights are bestowed up the royal macaques.

Rouketopolemos Rocket War (Greece)

The local traditional Rouketopolemos held in the town of Vrontados on the Greek island of Chios is celebrated at midnight before Easter Sunday. Akin to the Greek practice of throwing fireworks during merriment, two opponent church communities in the town take part in the “Rocket War". The battling parishes St. Mark's and Panaghia Ereithiani, are nested on two hilltops having a 400 meters distance from each other.

Tens of thousands home-made rockets are fired across the town, with the on-sight goal of hitting the bell tower of the church in the rivals terrain. The rockets are mounted on wooden sticks laden with explosive mixtures that contain gunpowder and are launched from platforms built for the occasion.
