From Pogba to Mane - The 7 Most Expensive Summer Signings of EPL 2016

BENGALURU: With broadcasting deals pumping in a whopping 5.14bn pounds into the English Premier League, almost all of the 20 clubs have broken their transfer records to bring in more quality players in order to up their games. The inflation in the transfer market has not deterred the spending resolve of the teams, although one has to agree with Arsene Wenger when he says, “Today in Europe you have two markets. One for the English clubs and one for the rest of Europe. The danger of the English situation is that the English clubs can suffocate themselves in the long term because they buy players at a very high price. That means there are very high wages linked with it and, if they are wrong, they will have these players with high wages who cannot move anywhere else.” But regardless of Arsene’s opinion, the spending this summer has been astonishing and off the charts. Here we look at the 7 most expensive EPL signings of this summer.

Paul Pogba

Signed as a promising prospect from French side Le Havre in 2009, Pogba played for both Manchester United’s U18 and U21 teams and was widely touted as the heir to club legend, Paul Scholes. But a failure on United’s part to offer him a better contract saw him move to Juventus in 2012 on a free transfer, having played only 3 first team games. Four years on, United decided to swallow their pride and break the world record transfer fee to bring Pogba back to Old Trafford. The young midfield powerhouse, who left United for a meager compensation of 800,000 pounds, has returned for a staggering 89.3mn pounds.
