World's Most Difficult Runways For Takeoffs And Landings

2. Paro, Bhutan

Paro is one of the most challenging airports to land on in the world. With the landing strip surrounded by the monolithic peaks of the Himalayas, only eight pilots had the certified skill to land there. As Paro is located in a deep valley, landing requires incredible technical skills.

When approaching the runway, the pilot needs to first negotiate numerous mountains, then rapidly move down to the ground and then pull off a steep bank to the left immediately before arriving and landing on the tarmac. Travelers risk their lives before visiting the kingdom. It is the only airport in the kingdom surrounded by the Himalayan peaks reaching over 6000 meters.

3. International Airport of Princess Juliana, St.Martin

The airport of Princess Juliana is situated in one of the biggest transport bends of the Caribbean region. The length of the runway here is only 2.180 meters. This runway is enough for small and middle size aircrafts, but not for wide-body Boeing 747 and Airbus A340 with tourists regularly arriving at this airport.

The pilots have to move down the airplane in a way that it touches the barrier of the runway. The runway starts straigh from the beach behind the barrier of the airport posing a double risk.
