World Press Freedom Index: All You Want to Know about the Annual Press Freedom Ranking and India's Position


So, where does India stand in the ranking?

Appallingly low! The 2016 ‘World Press Freedom Index’ released by Reporters Without Borders (RSF) ranks India at 133 among 180 countries. Though India has jumped three spots from the 136th position it had in the previous year, but still freedom given to media in India remains stumpy! “Journalists and bloggers are attacked and anathematized by various religious groups that are quick to take offense,” the World Press Freedom Index report said. The report also mentions difficulty media faces in India by stating “It is hard for journalists to cover regions such as Kashmir that are regarded as sensitive by the government”.
